as owner of both I feel I am within my rights to make an unbiased opinion, that coupe is much much better looking than the roadster - its a future classic :)

:poke: @ roadster owners

Taz - can you please stand up when you address us ? Oh, wait a minute... :P

F off lol

:friends:

I love these threads.

Tuna salad for dinner tonight. Now where's the tin opener.

I dont get these topics:
I mean whenever someone opens a topic where is being said that the roadster is a better choice, it seems that all the coupe owners form some kind of angry mob ready to lynch the guy and to be honest with some pretty harsh words and all (see the escalation in goldbcfc's topic), but whenever a coupe owner starts a topic that the coupe is much better all roadster owners dont seem to care. Like...meh.... whatever...
(see this topic and the other one)

Why is that? why do coupe owners seem so desperate to defend their choice and car and roadster owners seem to be so much more relaxed and forgiving in the opinionated discussion (and maybe more confident with their choice)? Are coupe owners that huffy?
Does opening the roof of your car when the sun is out benefit the mental wellbeing? Or does it take a different person to begin with?

Just a thought... :tumbleweed:

The other thread really escalated due to personal remarks not roadster vs coupe. I couldn't care less which somebody owns.

Even though I have a coupe and love it, I do look at the roadsters and think I should of got that first. Then moved to the coupe. I think.both are stunning in their own way. Not many roadsters can compete with its looks even after all these years of the z4.

I'm also on my 2nd E86 (only other car I have ever owned 2 of was Capri 2.8 injection) so I must like them!

In reality I like all Z4s, E85, E86 and E89 but I've never been a fan of any convertible and personally like the E86 more than the others.

I sometimes pop the odd :poke: or :fuelfire: into posts for a bit of light-hearted banter, but can quite understand why anyone might prefer an E85 or E89.

At the end of the day we all like Z4s just different ones!

If someone tried to justify an SLK or TT I might not be quite so understanding!

You have missed a lot my friend, that topic which you highlighted which was mine was a total and utter joke. Not meant to be taken seriously. If you don't know why I wrote it then don't worry, you just don't get it so don't worry.

Yes I know but but goldies thread was also started out of light heartedness. Or at least that's what he says in his topic. Still it exploded.

Its all banter at the end of the day if you take it to far you will get offended of course. My first ever bmw was a 318ci of course of I got lynched by everyone who had a 6cyl until I bought a 330ci. Then it was ok but still not cool enough for the M3 lot typical. I had years of you bought the wrong car and convertibles are crap from coupe owners on forums. The only difference I can see now is Z4 roadsters out number Z4 coupes. Which for most other models you could say coupes normally out number convertibles sold. I think this is why there's generally no need to defend roadsters as much being the majority for once. I'm sure coupe owners would agree they enjoy driving with the windows down on a warm day. I just cant understand why open too driving is so bad for them. As for being a womens/hairdresses cars I honestly only see men driving them daily in the city. Maybe in coastal towns or villages that's the imagine but not around my way.

That's a cobra replica on Z3 chassis but Roadsters united on arrival at Bmw show last weekend

All by yourself at the service station on the way. It was nice, reason I took the pic

I know this thread is deliberately provocative and to attract banter, but if we're talking about "design classic status" let's elevate this thread into a discussion about design and aesthetics, rather than the tedious personal preferences of roadster or coupe.

Using the photo of the Z4Coupe that goldbcfc posted, you can see that the the Coupe has a top line which flows from the crease in the front wing right over the top to the rear of the car. The roadster doesn't have the roof to continue the smooth line and consequently it is missing a lot from an aesthetic perspective.

The blue line in the photo below shows how the creases in the front wing, door and rear wing, define the side of the car from the upper surface, which particularly accentuates the wide rear wheel arches.

The green line in the photo below shows how the outline of the door flows into the the demarcation of cill and front wing and also the bonnet and front bumper as one smooth continuous line.

If you now put all these lines and a few other lines together as one image, as in the image below, the very distinctive and recognisable shape of the Z4 Coupe is drawn with the least number of lines of the shortest length. The fact that all the lines also have a practical function for both construction of the car and aerodynamically in use, makes this is a truly elegant design and the work of genius. In my opinion, the Z4 Coupe is a genuine work of art and worthy of inclusion in any museum of design as a masterpiece.

 Nice analysis Exdos

Of course the original post was a bit of click bait, and was meant to be just good fun. In all seriousness though, I do agree with the design classic bit. As well as the proportions, I think it's because the Coupe referenced so many classic design themes, particularly from the 50's and 60's, whilst giving them a new twist. A few examples;

Alfa Zagato Coupe.jpg
Aston DB Mk 3 Coupe.jpg
Alfa 2000 Sportiva.jpg
Ferrari 195 Inter.jpg

The double bubble roof on the Coupe is a direct homage to Zagato and is just one of the reasons that everytime I park up, I walk away looking over my shoulder. The Roadster can obviously look at cars like the Healey 3000 etc for it's inspiration, but for me the Coupe just nails it a little bit better.

lol what a bunch of BS
I can draw the same lines on a roadster with some BS words about how the curvature continues its exponential lines and whatnot...

Everyone can fill in the bla bla empy words to continue a similar storyline..

It all just underlines that coupe drivers are somehow huffy and are apparently mostly involved with the looks of their car, maybe missing the experience of an open top. Or maybe out of frustration that a roadster has a feature a coupe simply has not. :P

Banter aside two Jap versions have always stood out for me , both gorgeous motors & both showing BMW weren't exactly inventing something radical with the Zc

Yep, two examples I looked at adding to the list. The point for me is they weren't inventing anything radical - it was a re-interpretation of classic lines. It gives the car a real depth of character that goes beyond something to simply get you from A to B. The convertible can obviously claim the same with extra headroom :)
