Roadster or Coupe?

That argument only works if you bought new too...personally I like others to bear the brunt of the depreciation and buy the performance car bargain of the century. This is also an excellent means of justifying the extra tax costs!

I prefer the looks of the coupe... but testing out the speed limiter in bright sunshine with the top down (on the autobahn) brought such a smile to my face that I know I was right to get the MR.

On this side of the pond no difference.... :scratchhead:

Actually, here in the US the coupes are doing better than roadsters, by a few grand. The average price of a used M Coupe is $36k; average for an M Roadster is $32k. And bear in mind the M Coupe was cheaper when new. Part of it is they're scarce and getting more so - I'd guess about 20 of the US Z4MCs have been totalled.

The chief reason I picked the coupe was track days - here in the US most tracks don't allow roadsters unless you add a roll-bar. Buying used, with no plans for tracking it, I'd say the M Roadster's the better value; I'd use the savings to get a hardtop.

We've had this discussion here several times - fact is we, all bought what we bought because we prefer it...

...and of course, Coupe's are obviously better.

:P ;)

epbrown, then must be regional as in this area comparing a 2006 roadster and coupe both from new have depreciated 44% based upon figured dated last Friday.

Edit: Actually the roadster has likely done better from new in this area as my dealer was providing a pretty good discount from list on all roadsters including the M. Not so on the coupe. The 2 that they sold over the 3 year period were at full list or so I was told.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone, I guess I will need to test drive both (fingers crossed my financial situation allows this early next year).

I currently own a 2.5 roadster and do love having the top down at every oportunity, my dilema is:

I think buying the coupe will make me feel more like I'm buying a different car than the one I currently have (and they look great) but I think I will miss the oportunity to put the top down. Driving top down on a country road is great on a sunny day with the wind in your face etc.

Are there any other differences in ownership between the two?

Do the Coupes hold their value more? I am hoping to buy one that is no more than 2 years old so I get at least one year BMW warranty

Roadster - cant beat that feeling of driving round with nothing above your head! Especially on a clear night!

But saying that, a convertible is one of those things that you either just have to have and have always wanted, or not that bothered... if you have had one already then you will know if you will miss it!

I have a 2.5 roadster - frickin' great car! Went to a meet the other weekend where there was a glorious sounding red M and that left thinking MMMMMMM! Last weekend, thinking of an upgrade and to satisfy my curiosity I drove a couple, roadsters that is. Trust me, the M is a very different car.

My car was advertised anyway (speculatively for a possible cheap upgrade to a 3.0), now I'm hoping I don't do something silly!

IMO MCoupe owners paying over the odds again :D
MCs were cheaper to buy new remember so coupe owners must be paying more money for less of a car IMO  :tumbleweed:

A few helpful pointers
imola red ones and interlagos blue M's are worth less too !!
Roadsters are to soggy wobbly as they have no roof, coupe owners have bad backs are their suspension is made from concrete blocks
Air filter intakes are worth at least 30 horses, but only if made from carbon fibre
coupes are faster than roadsters, why ...just coz they are

all said tounge in cheek.......but with some truths we all read here almost weekly.

The Z4m cars are all brill enjoy what you buy, if you love roadsters buy one, if you want a roof then get the other
sorted 8)

If you like wind in hair and open top motoring, which imho is really fantastic vs being Coupe'd up, then Roadster.

If you are ugly, or don't like the open-air driving experience, then Coupe will be best :D

Personally I couldn't buy a Coupe sports car. It just seems so wrong to put a roof on something interesting and half exciting, just look at the Carrera GT as an example :D

Whichever one you buy fella, trust me it will feel like a different car  8)

Let's be honest, both MC and MR are absolutely FAB.

If your climate gives you enough opportunities to drive with the roof down, then it's a god given gift to ride in a roadster.

Well said....

My friend use to own a Z4M Coupe which I actually travelled as passenger in while he did a Spa track day so I know the kind of performance that is available which is pretty awesome. He overtook a DB9 and kept up with a CSL with almost identical speed, so yes either one will be a big step up.

I thought most tests resulted in a quicker 0-60 time for the roadster compared to the coupe, I know the coupe is marginally heavier.

Been trying to work out the tunnels comment but finally got it. It's the only time you can drive with the roof down in this country without getting rained on yes?

:poke:

9.30 p.m summer's day,
roof down in the 'new Mersey Tunnel'
very little traffic, no speed cameras,
sports exhaust, :driving:

An unforgettable aural experience :D

These so called truths do my head in also. :headbang: Makes perfect sense that the launch colours are worth less
