Roadster or Coupe?

The first time I saw a coupe it was an MZ3, and he left me standing with a snarl of exhaust, ( I didn't know any better at the time, LOL) BUT I did think and still do, that the coupes look like new versions of my friends Triumph GT6+ that we tore around here in '75. The choice is always a personal thing, coupe or ragtop....??? They are BOTH great cars.

Imagine driving across Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, in the summer, tunes cranked up, clear blue sky as far as you can see, 85 degrees out and a clear road. .......Amazing.
Now imagine it with a roof over your head. If you already imagined a roof on the car, you need a coupe.

Otherwise ragtops are the word of the day. (or convertible hard tops)

From the moment I started looking at buying a zed to the moment I purchased one about a month ago, it was roadster hands down for me. Fun because of the top down and sexy because the soft top is so sweet on the zed. I've always felt the coupe looks like a shoe and such a waste of money if you can't take the top down, especially if you have the option to on a similar zed roaster.

That said, to be completely fair, now that I've lurked this forum for about 3 months, I am growing to really like the coupe as well. It *does* indeed have this more aggressive, heavy look. I would guess the coupe has more horsepower just based on sheer looks, whatever that silly comment is worth :).

Somehow, when I look at the roadster, I imagine a 4 banger in there, but when I look at the coupe, I imagine a straight 6. Perhaps it's because the coupe is so bulky and heavy looking that it has *got* to have a 6 cylinder engine to pull it :)

Why are we comparing two such sexy, sexy cars? :)

I literally wait for the next moment I get to drive with the top down. These few nights have been rainy.. but today, it looks promising....

This argument will never get settled. People bought Coupe's because they wanted a Coupe, and people bought Roadsters because they wanted a Roadster! So of course they are going to think whichever one they own is the best.

But Coupe's are the best  :P

You can always rely on a coupe owner to mention 'stiffness'

Stiffness is important... :) Torsional rigidity according to Google:

Z4M Roadster : 14,500 Nm/deg
Z4M Coupe : 32,000 Nm/deg

Comparisons

Koenigsseg CC : 28,100 nm/deg
Honda S2000 : 7,500 NM/deg
Lamborghini Gallardo: 23,000 Nm/deg
Ferrari 360 Modena : 23,000 nm/deg
Ferrari 360 Spider : 8,500 Nm/deg
Aston Martin DB9 Coupe : 27,000 Nm/deg
Aston Martin DB9 Convertible : 15,500 Nm/deg
Lotus Elise : 8,600 nm/deg

Elise handles great, as does the S2000, both with low values of torsional rigidity and convertable.

The Ksegg is convertable and is very stiff, and likely handles well.

Thus the torsional rigidity value on it's own doesn't say much at all, just like quoting the wheelbase means little without lots of other variables considered :)

I like both, but I like to have the option of having the roof down, because all said and done I think a roof is pointless. Rag top does the job when it's wet and that is all a roof needs to do :)

Never said it did :)

Logic and reasoning not really important on this thread anymore...just playing Top Trumps now!

...one MUST be better and the other driver wrong, RIGHT?!? :D

 About sums it up!

Damn... what am I doing applauding the ramblings of a tin-can lover :?

Hehe...

Now one thing I never really worked out, in car Top Trumps, is lower weight better, or higher weight?

Roadster is lighter :poke:

Lighter. Yes, by about 10kg. Your weight advantage is negated if i simply skip breakfast one morning.

thank god i only weigh about 4 stone in the first place then, and i drive a roadster.

i think we need a z4-forum drag race.

10kg of breakfast in the morning...are you sure you're only 66kgs :poke:

But I do agree that the weight difference is negligible here...just as much as I agree that the torsional rigidity argument is negligible. It's not like us guys in roadsters are driving a car made out of elastic bands. I'd question anyone who could notice a significant reduction in handling ability (if any) going from Coupe to Roadster (or vice versa for that matter).

I love both these cars. They're both as fast as each other round the track, both as good looking as each other, both have that amazing straight 6....but the simple formula (for me) is:

Roadster = Coupe + driving thrill of having the roof down...therefore Roadster is better than Coupe.............proved! :D

ah yes, but 2nd Gen Zed = (((roadster + coupe) + top down thrill) minus tiny trunk/boot ).

Therefore the clear winner is : 2nd Gen Zed

And the runner up is : .....still to be determined as both coupe and roadster are equal with a 50/50 vote. (I like them both)

Is that political or what?
