Retrofit Cruise Control

So I fitted my cruise control this weekend and now I've got the whole thing rigged up and it isn't working.

The stalk does nothing and the "faulty light" warning light is on. What have I done?!

dremel is overkill

I just scored it first with a stanley knife and cut it out with one smooth slice. It took less than fifteen seconds for a perfect job. :driving:

EDIT-
This was not a suggestion, I have been a builder/joiner for decades. Do not expect to have the same level of dexterity thatI have developed over the years, use a dremmel if you are uncertain.

Installed mine too and works perfectly (and I used a Dremel :) )

I have a 4 pin plug just like the above pictured one on mine, guessing I can just plug and play then! (2005 car but built in July 2004!)

Latest price from BMW is £76.28 fyi, for just the stalk.
Ive just bought one from Cooper Malton for £63 plus VAT, Easy to fit. I used a hack saw and stanly knife as thats all I had.
Dealer told me it would need coding and even printed off fitting instructions, which I never even looked at. :D

anyone can re-add photos to the how to?

I also have another question for brad. on your uploaded photo i see that you took the plastic cover under the wheel and you cut it in order for the cruise control switch to be installed. What i don't understand is where does the plastic part i have circled in photo3 belong to?

That plastic piece is actually part of the stalk you buy.
That one has actually been cut slightly too big, as there shouldnt be a gap at the bottom.

Thanks for the guide guys!!

Just fitted mine today took me half an hour including digging out the Dremel and drinking a brew

Just fitted mine on a 2008 N46. Worked perfectly. Took a bit longer than some others experienced but there was also a tad more to do than on earlier cars. One happy bunny getting set for the long distance weekend trips. :driving:

Tested mine tonight. Easy fit no dremmel needed - junior hacksaw and a file. Car is all modded & sorted.......... ready for summer :D

Thanks for all the info guys.
My local BMW dealer quoted me £515.68 to retrofit cruise control on my 2003 Z4.
Thank goodness I checked the forum first!!!!!

Ocean BMW in Plymouth.
They said it was £240 ish for the parts which I assume included a new cowling rather than cutting out the old one and they had allowed up to 3 hrs to fit it.
Bought the stalk & fitted it myself this morning and it's as easy as all the posts say it is.
All fitted before my cuppa was cold enough to drink!!

Can I suggest you go back into the dealership & ask to speak to the Branch Manager. Explain your experience & how simple it had been for you to do the job - you wanted to make him aware that these kind of experiences give Main Dealers a bad name & are not exactly likely to encourage people like you to one day buy their new car from them.

Your objective: To see if they offer to make amends by giving a competitive price on future servicing - don't ask, just see if they offer it. If they don't give you the time of day, say as you're leaving that you're a member of this forum & will be sharing your experiences.

Best of luck...

Hello to all on the forum, picking up my Z4 2007 thursday, its an auto.
