Retrofit Cruise Control

Hi
Has anybody actually done this mod on a post 04 model?
I have an 06 model, and have carried out everything up to the point where I plug the wire into pin 39 of the plug X60191. The sketch of the engine bay looks nothing like mine, the siemens aluminium thingy (I am more used to working on older engines, and have no idea what it is!) seems to be mounted differently, with the plugs facing the front of the car rather than the sky. Also there seem to be about 300 wires coming out of it.

There is no clear marking that I can see to differentiate the plug "X60191" from the rest, any chance someone could stick a photo in so I can finish the mod?

mines a Nov 04 model.

Is it 100% guaranteed that ill need to buy the extra parts? Is there and easy way to check this out?

date of build cut off is Oct 04...

two ways to check... build plate on the nearside (I think) wheelarch under the bonnet or drop the lower steering wheel cowel off and look for the spare plug waiting to receive the switch. I have a picture somewhere which I will fish out.

Edit - This is the spare plug you would be looking for:

removal of lower steering cowel is simple - release the tilt adjust lever and un screw one screw and then it just snaps off.

Hi

Question, regarding suppliers for the parts the company i order the parts have fallen through - limited stock !!

What the best prices for the stalk and additional wire loop people have paid? and from where?

1x Cruise Control Stalk (EU BMW Part Number: 61 31 6 940 989) - £60 seem the normal

Additional wiring harness "A" as shown in the above instructions. (EU BMW Part Number:61 12 0 411 248) £20 the normal

Have people considered scrap yard for cruise control stalk or is that a risk to far :?

Many thanks Al :)

Hi from a newby who has just aquired a Z4 and would like to add the cruise control option. Is it simply the case that you add this control stalk and thats all, nothing else ? Can it be that simple ?

hello :)

well that depends on the month and year of build :)

Pre Oct 2004, the wiring was all intact so yes it was a straight forward plug and play 10 minute DIY job...

after that you need to install the wiring loom as well.

all of which is already in this thread :poke:

Hi

Thanks for that, its a June 04 3.0i (dont pick it up till next week cant wait) so it should be OK. All I have to do now is find a cruise control stalk, they seem to be in sort supply.

Thanks

Thanks and regards,

Completed the cruise retrofit last night, It went like a dream, Every part that I had to disassemble/reassemble went in with a satisfying and positive CLICK!

If anyone else is thinking of cruise and has a post '04 plate with a M54 engine, I will happily try to answer any questions you have on this install.

Hello Spooky,

I have a 2006 Z4 with the S54 engine, will the install be the same? Any help will be highly appreciated.

Thanks,

Korsou

Just to say I have a 08 Z4 2.5 SE. I retrofitted the cruise control. It took time (3Hrs) but was easy. Bought my stalk online with wiring loom for £80. Bargain.

I use it all the time on the motorway and wonder how I got by without it.

However there is an important issue:

The BMW instructions are WRONG about the socket and pin the cruise control wire goes into in the engine management electronics. A cynic might suspect foul play here. Surely they would not lie to ensure they get extra money.....

NO ECU CODING IS REQUIRED It works straight away if you wire it right.

There is a post or link on this website to a chap who did a write up and gives the correct socket and pin address, seek it out before you start. And to the gentleman that did write it up - thank you very much.

Hello Tannera34,

Do you know if this is the same for a Z4 M Roadster 2006? If so can you please tell me what link you refer to below and also how you did it. From my reading it seems the the post Oct-2004 cars do not have the harness.

Any help I would appreciate.

Thanks and regards,

Hey thanks for this. Installed cruise now and it was a breeze for the actual cruise part. Just taken the car out and all works fine. I was having a blast so nearly forgot to try the cruise!

Wasn't so cheap as I had to buy a dremel..... :D I have wanted one for ages but never quite sure what I would use it for.....

Only thing is being new to dremel I was slightly enthusastic on the sanding part. I tried the cutting disc on a spare piece of plastic but didn't apply the same intelligence to the sanding disc. Result is I have gone slightly further than the fitting. Not too noticeable but obviously not the perfect fit as per the photos on this thread. I may have to change cowl or try to fill it up again at some point. Ho hum. I guess the warning is to be careful.

Oh - meant to say. When I took her out, the battery warning light came on. I stopped for a bit and was a tad worried about whether it would restart but it was fine and the light has disappeared. Is this something I need to be concerned about at all?

Just done this mod following the excellent instructions. My friendly bodyshop cut the cowl for free - they get plenty of work from me! 10 minutes to fit.... happy days!

Waiting for the rain to stop lashing down to take it out and test it....
