Researching "Phase 3" on the Z4 advice.

Why do people always say power is pointless on the road? If that was true why do sports cars sell? , what percentage of people with sports cars actually track their cars? I've always had the fastest car I can afford and have never been on a track. Not all roads are 30mph and rush hour traffic. My M is my dd and love giving it a blast every now and again!

Who said it was pointless?

I was asking how JE will measure success? And, in my opinion, happening to burn off another car from the lights is not proof that you have the faster car.

Lots of reasons to have, within reason, more power on the road, easier, safer overtakes; fun, etc ...

Your Original post is asking for advise and opinions,
alot of people have already suggested buying a alternative Z4 but it seems you have made you mind up before posting this thread and are not prepaired to listen to anyone unless its along the lines of "Go for it" re; Engine swap.

Did you read my "Inventing something that already exists" comment or is its not what you want to hear? Your re-inventing the wheel (re-inventing the 3.0lt Z4, which has been done by BMW 10+ years back)?

Its not that i have anything against you or the end product in question, but i will NOT be "blown away" or impressed by anyone that chooses to turn their Pre-facelift 2.0lt E85 into a 3.0lt one. Why anyone would is beyond me, when if you look through PistonHeads Classified you could find 100 3.0lt Z4's for sale? Also some of these cars possibly alot newer and superseed your current car (not just Sports seats, multifuntion wheel etc... the base and internals), with newer parts which would be the best possible base for any further engine mods.

For the record (based on that i have previously "Changed"* many engines in cars) i say: Buy a Silver 3.0lt Z4 E85, Swap all your Mods (Wheels, lights seats etc..), THEN go to work modifying that car.

Also maybe stop being rude and having ago at people that give you advice with your repeated on going theme that you dont agree with.

We all love our own Z4's, but i wouldnt hesitate to buy a different more powerful car if thats what i wanted (which is what i am currently doing) :driving:

* "Changed" to bespoke engines, not something that could easily be bought

This man speaks so much truth.

However given much of it will be disregarded, I'm going to need some popcorn for this thread (and all the others like it)

Good point re power on the road. Was discussing this with ZermattV from the forum at Knockhill a few weeks back.

The sad reality is that no matter how fast or powerful your car is, there will always be some nutter driving a turbo diesel Golf who values his/her licence less than you value yours. As such, he/she will happily overtake you on a blind crest doing 100mph so he/she can boast to his/her mates about "smoking" a Z4 in a "race".

I'd imagine he'd measure his success by getting in his car and being scared $hitless  rather than being disappointed.
maybe I misunderstood your post and jumped to a conclusion after hearing a lot of people say similar.

Lol, all the whinging about JE's 92,000 threads on the same subject - this one has actually provided me with my morning's entertainment!

Whilst i totally disagree with throwing money away in pursuit of something you can have for less, (and then you could spend the same money on making it even better...!) As said many millions of times before, it's JE's car, and he can do wtf he likes to it. Nobody is entitled to an opinion if it's just rude and contributes nothing.

Personally as long as JE keeps it tasteful (therefore not making it look retarded and cheap, bringing down the awesome Z4 brand..), as he has done to date .. hats off to him.

Arguing (and by arguing, i mean.. below the belt comments about finances, parts costs, mine is better than yours, etc), on forums is just dumb, arrange a meet and punch each other out of sight of the rest of us.

With regards to the actual thread topic - JE what do you want from it? if it's ///M killer, in terms of raw acceleration? (i'm not sure how you'll do with handling/balance vs the pretty good ///M) - Go for the cheapest way to achieve your goal. If you want 400+bhp, do it the easiest (and most reliable) way you can. If you're going for unique, that won't involve an S54 imo.

I love the 3.4+FI route, but chatting to MM the other day he really likes the idea so i'll let him fight that out :p I also think it suits his car - a very mechanically minded tuning project, i think the JE 'Essex' project is more aesthetic (and now needs power to back up the visual claims!) Have you considered the newer gen engines? the 35i engine with two small turbos would be cool, duno if it' fit tho? You can whack a JB4 chip in them and turn them up and down 80bhp at will!

Buy this!!!

Certainly is cheap as chips, for a donor car. Many of the bits can be swapped, as I'm pretty sure the drivetrain and engine will be in full working order

No doubt the seats could be swapped too :D

do it jonny.... the hydraulic steering one the z4m is wonderful!!! i drive so many different cars in the day by the weekend i jump in the z4 and i can feel so much more happening... its prob one of my fave pieces of the stock car, with everything going electric I'm pleased we have that setup, the car feels proper old school compared to todays setups... i think one day these type of cars will be collected and cherished! their day is over!

JE,

I've been reading this thread with interest and amusement as there seems to be one camp egging you on to do it and another advising you against it.

I feel your not being pragmatic about this and letting your heart rule your head.

I know you love and cherish your car and you are giving the engine swap serous consideration as you want more power but I don't think you have thought beyond that.

Lots of ppl have done conversions and you love some and hate some but the owner feels pride for them as I'm sure you will IF you do your conversion. The part you haven't given thought to is that most of these ppl have carried out the conversion themselves so you will need to be extremely mechanically minded yourself as when driving the car, you will need to work out what every noise, creak and bang means. You'll find it hard to get any specific mechanical help on the forum because the mechanics of the car will be unique to your car and as you have paid someone else to do them, you could end up ruining the car you cherish by not understanding what is behind the mechanics.

So what I'm saying is if you attempt this, have you got the mechanical commitment that is going to be needed to then continue using this as an everyday car?

Just a thought to consider

He won't sell his car, we've established that....so next best thing is to fit a v8/10
And I'll almost say it makes sense if he decides to fit a truly epic engine into it!

I'd love to find a really old zed for cheap and rip the engine out as a project! If I was rich obv!

Would love to see a corvette V8 in JE's Z.

He would get a lot more support and interest from everyone, not that it matters really but it shows how well received it would be

Imagine going to a car show...one guy has his bonnet open with a 3.0 engine he's transplanted...and one next to it has a corvette shoehorned in there...

You'd move the 3.0 just to fit more people around the v8 car!

Seriously j.e...it would be epic if you did that. Don't go through all the heartache unless it's something awesome!!
