Researching "Phase 3" on the Z4 advice.

JE - I've got a suggestion:

1. Spend some time talking to a few tuners and researching the market.
2. Make a decision about what you want to do.
3. Stick with that decision.
4. Don't start another 5 threads about it.
5. Instead, get all the work done/buy another car, then come back and surprise us all

I know you're really passionate about your car, I admire that. But it's getting really, REALLY boring seeing the same thread come up every 4 weeks

When I got my new car in Jan, I just did it. BANG - new car. No chit chat, just straight in.

So..... go get the work done, then surprise us all with the outcome

Make sure you take plenty pics with the "in progress" work 8)

Just man up and by an M and join Beedub with a 600+hp Z instead of making all these bloody threads where people ridicule you! Prove them all wrong and buy the right car to start with then the plan is a lot easier.

Just my 2cent.

Bedub - I'm a huge fan of your car and appreciate your passion. All talk and no action definatly doesn't apply to you
The reason ive got a 2L is due to the 28k cost at new which is all i could afford nearly 9 years ago unlike the FAR cheaper 2nd hand ginger 3L you own, and im not ready to buy an engine that would sit around for a year either and i know there is better examples to be had plus i want to upgrade other performance up grades first.
And "All talk" was once said to me when i first joined about all the mods i planned.....
What a spinner!!!

Nothing personal but you did call my (and everyone else's)'107's "turd":

1) Your car is only worth what you can sell it for, I would say around £6k tops.
2) If money is no object, why do you talk about it so much?
3) When you were paying £28k for a 4 pot, which bit of your brain wasn't working?
4) My car is ginger as a lot others are on here, but the headlights don't mist up and it doesn't keep me awake at night!
5) Want a race????

I wouldnt rise to his bate mate.

However owning "new car" for 9 years being a "car enthusiast" and then doing your first mod after 7 years... I just cant get my head around it!

That being said... I hope jonny does do something with his car... As at the moment it is all talk... And judging by how he did get a red roof in the end i think he may!

I've said it before....here's the options:

1) Spend 1k a month financing and running a very special car....like a tvr or a Ferrari on finance
2) if you must keep the car but want to make it special, make it truly awesome and slide a v8 corvette engine in there!
3) If you want to stay with a zed but want to save hassle of engine swaps buy an ///m...and once you're bored of 340hp buy a charger. Swap over all your roof and other mods if need be

I'll even sell you mine today as is for 11.5k

or offer me something i can refuse ......

then you'll have a truly unique z4m, .... in what has got to be as close to new z4m as possible, the underside looks like it just rolled of the factory line. its been an awesome 6.5 years but, every things for sale at the right price.... everything.

shall i send my bank account number for you to transfer my 35k? :tumbleweed: :tumbleweed: :tumbleweed: :tumbleweed: :tumbleweed: :tumbleweed:

Ok MOST of you i respect your comments, woots, aquazi, bing, Adamski, Tom etc and your right i am mad as a mexicans dog not to have chopped in the 2L for a ///M then mod her.......however i wont sooooo i will surprise you rather keep posting about it, one clue the performance mods towards the engine swap will start in Sept this year.
So just from me but i will post the performance mods as i get them so no more talk about BHP or engine swaps until you see a picture of a different engine sitting in place of the 2L

i can't lie... i don't blame you.... if you love the thing just keep going, thats pretty much what I've done, except on every aspect of performance and function, instead of aesthetics.. i still vote for the aplina 3.4, and twin screw, stage 2, you can stage 3 it when your flush and have something pretty much one off in the uk at least.

You're very unlikely to find an engine from an Alpina RS, just too few in the UK, but the same engine was used in the Alpina B3S and there are more of them around

...that pina engine is very special too....
Oh yes, it is that.... 8)
Don't do what Beedub suggested with the pina engine!! This is what I wanted to do!!!

So what are the big differences with the engines? Head work? crank? Larger bores?
Lots of differences Matt, as an idea, the 3.4S engine is hand built using the block from the US spec E36 M3 bored out to 3.4L then mated to a single vanos head, custom lightweight Mahle pistons, a custom S/S Boyssen exhaust system, Alpina tuning... and a little bit of magic fairy dust...

There's obviously something about Alpinas that BMW themselves like as they're still the only independent company that BMW allow to make 'improved' versions of BMWs that they sell through the BMW dealer network - Newer Alpinas are even assembled on the BMW production line as custom builds before being shipped to the Alpina factory at Buchloe for final fettling...

6) If you have had your car for nearly 9 years and claim to spend a grand a month on it (nearly £96,000) would you not prefer a Ferrari? Or something with a few more cylinders?
Like some have said not to rise to your unbelievable stupid comments, your clearly not following my work to come up with such utter f***ing Pony, do me a favour keep the s**t to yourself unless we ever meet and then were chat then face to face.

I'm not sure what planet your on, "following your work"???? Like I said, a silver 4 pot with a red roof that is better than everyone else's because they didn't buy theirs new.

A little bit of poo just popped out

Your Original post is asking for advise and opinions,
alot of people have already suggested buying a alternative Z4 but it seems you have made you mind up before posting this thread and are not prepaired to listen to anyone unless its along the lines of "Go for it" re; Engine swap.

Did you read my "Inventing something that already exists" comment or is its not what you want to hear? Your re-inventing the wheel (re-inventing the 3.0lt Z4, which has been done by BMW 10+ years back)?

Its not that i have anything against you or the end product in question, but i will NOT be "blown away" or impressed by anyone that chooses to turn their Pre-facelift 2.0lt E85 into a 3.0lt one. Why anyone would is beyond me, when if you look through PistonHeads Classified you could find 100 3.0lt Z4's for sale? Also some of these cars possibly alot newer and superseed your current car (not just Sports seats, multifuntion wheel etc... the base and internals), with newer parts which would be the best possible base for any further engine mods.

For the record (based on that i have previously "Changed"* many engines in cars) i say: Buy a Silver 3.0lt Z4 E85, Swap all your Mods (Wheels, lights seats etc..), THEN go to work modifying that car.

Also maybe stop being rude and having ago at people that give you advice with your repeated on going theme that you dont agree with.

We all love our own Z4's, but i wouldnt hesitate to buy a different more powerful car if thats what i wanted (which is what i am currently doing) :driving:

* "Changed" to bespoke engines, not something that could easily be bought

Whatever you do, do it quickly and post lots of pictures.

Surely the motivation behind an engine swap should be to create a car that doesn't already exist? A bit like my mate who bunged a 2L turbo Calibra engine in his Corsa-B back in the day. Doing an OEM engine translpant in a car that already boasts a 3L and 3.2L in its range is utter madness.

As I tried to hint earlier, what is important is to know yourself what you want to get out of this? What will you be using the car for and what would you consider a good "result"?

For example track use (which I don't think interests you) would suggest a very different approach from a pure road car. If a road car then *why* do you want a different engine? Is it merely for more power, for the challenge of doing the change, from the satisfaction of having something unusual?

I really recommend thinking this through carefully before you spend a lot of money. I speak from experience.

Unfortunately of course sometimes you won't know until *after* you have started and sometimes not until after you have finished ... :)

JE's after an "M Killer", so I'm guessing anything that could outrun an M would be a good result for him. Maybe a bit presumptuous, but I'd imagine the reason for JE doing this is merely to allow him to swing his dick to greater avail

There is a written off M on ebay for 6 k. Donor car! Buy that and you have absolutely everything you need! Complete drivetrain and suspension, brakes, electronics. Even the hydraulic power steering! Then you get a few k back selling everything else! You'd be mad not to choose that option imo. Don't see the point in putting a 3.0 in there but an M engine is another story.

I was taken out for a spin in a M yesterday. Now i get it!! For get the 3.0l JE just get an M engine or car. Hell forget that lets split buying the M Sim said about i have the engine you have mine and everything else????

Well, that is absolutely fair enough but you still need to think about how you will use it and measure your "success".

For example is it going to be about "winning" on the road in a traffic light grand prix? In which case you can probably beat many an M today, since driving fast on the road is generally about who is the more rash. Is it going to be in a VMax type event, where you get real speed data in a known scenario - that will need power and aero, some brakes also handy ... ;) Different again if it is on track - where power helps but lightness, suspension, brakes, tyres and talent are all worth far more.

If its just for down the pub then I think a rolling road printout is all you need.

Finally reliability - does that matter? Mucking about with engines isn't always a route to a reliable car ...
