If, like myself, you have an external amplifier powering the rear midrange, then adding a tweeter each side will improve the sound quality coming from the back of the car. I hear the crispness of the rear sounds over my shoulder while driving, so I'm glad I added them.

Here are a few photos I took while adding the tweeters.

Please note..DO NOT use 6.5” woofers…they are too tight for the mount / holes…you can fit them but it’s a lot of messing around…6” straightforward..

Damn it, it took me ages to find the ones I wanted :) not sure they do a 6" version.

So, is it the depth that's the issue or the actual mounting point?

The outer edge of the speaker mount clash with the 4 screw holes for the BMW mount..it will require a bit of messing around..I found out the hard way on the 35is..I use Fosgate Punch 6" woofer on my 20i..to good effect

I'm struggling find a set of 6" speakers I want (I said I'm fussy). How difficult is it to work around the speaker mount issue?

It’s possible just very fiddly with possible compromises

I'll watch some videos and see what I can figure out.

I think those Helix are 8".

Oops you’re right.. :headbang:

Does anyone know how much depth is available to mount new speakers in the footwell?

I've spoken to a car hifi shop and they seem to think they should be able to fit them one way or another. https://www.focal.com/products/pc-1... surface (Mounting depth) : 72.7 mm / 2.83 in

But were concerned that the ones linked above might be too deep? Any idea how much is available for speaker depth? The Focals I'm after are 72.3mm deep.

Anyone that's changed either the footwell speakers or the over shoulder 4" speakers, have you kept the standard speaker wires and did you sound deaden?

Hey OP I am bit late to the party but here is a link to my thread. You might find it of some use:

Thanks very much, I will go and have a read

So, I have to ask again as I don't think I got an answer before. Is there a reason why nobody replaces the BMW head unit? Seems like the weakest link to me......

If you ‘just’ have the basic radio then there are a few options now that look quite neat..if still not a factory look..if you have iDrive then it’s a lot more complex as you get ‘benefits’,with the CIC unit that you don’t get with the basic unit..

Having said that there’s no great IMHO point given it’s easy enough to upgrade the audio on the basic system..

I got my 4" Focal BMW speakers today. Unfortunately, they don't fit in the over-shoulder position. The actual speakers are 4", but the surrounds are a fair bit bigger than the standard ones.

Have to look for something else. Any ideas? these were recommended previously https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08CND9..._r_mwn_dp_Y75632YV6698QDFYZMC4&language=en_US, anyone know if these would fit straight in or would I have the same problems? Not even sure where I'd put the tweeters?

Maybe I'll just get the installer to pick/install something, they couldn't be much worse than the OEM ones.

Audison / Eton / Audiotec Fischer in that order..

Thanks for that. Can anybody confirm that any of the above fit as I can't be returning stuff all the time.

Yup all their bmw specfic stuff fits a ok…only issue is that the door speakers rear plastic guards may need trimming…

Just a word of advice: even if it's the same BMW speaker, the mounting position and angle will be different, so the model number is important, whether it's a genuine part or an OEM. For example, there are different grades even for standard, Hi-Fi, TOPHi-Fi, etc.

Cheers, I will take a look but pay more attention to the measurements.

I definitely have the second speaker with the small magnet.

It depends what you have already. When I first got mine I was shocked at the poor quality of the stereo (base model with only CD, Radio and AUX) which had a really bad sound quality.
So I stumbled upon a video showing how to retrofit an OE headunit that had Bluetooth (calls) and USB control built-in. So I did this mod and found another, far more important, improvement... the internal amplifier was far superior! So I now had much better sound
This, to me, is a first stage upgrade, at least at the time anyway. Of course, if you want more modern tech then you're going to have to fit something like the Android Touchscreen or an iDrive retrofit with an mmi box.
You can replace the headunit with a non-BMW unit, and even have adaptors for the steering wheel buttons and PDC sounds so they are fully functional. Personally I don't like that look though, but that's because I prefer it to look as OE as can be, that's just me though.
