Driving this morning roof up and red roof symbol appears on dash along with the gong sound. Disappeared then repeated again then off . Any suggestions?

I had similar last winter. I was driving one day, roof closed and the gong sounded randomly then went away. A few days later roof operation started to fail.

Turned out to be all related to a bad battery. Had that replaced and all was golden

I had an issue that sounds similar .

Is it truly random?
Hopefully it's no more than the battery

Did you replace the battery after the last roof issues you had? :?

Mine was traced to a rear micro switch. The one that's impossible to reach properly without taking half the car apart. Good squirt of WD40 did the trick.
(I just know it's gonna fail tomorrow now I've put that!)

Check the age of the battery,it’s stamped on top of the pole. The other thing it could be is a loose connections.

This happened to ours earlier this year. E89 2013 model.

At first just the red warning light (usually just after setting off) then the roof operation intermittent failure.

Main dealer struggled to find cause as no fault codes shown and problem never occurred whenever they drove it. :headbang:

On a hunch they changed two microswitches and been fine ever since.

Which ones did they change?

I’m getting a battery check on Saturday, first opportunity. If that’s the problem I’ll post up . If it’s sensor/s then it’s an auto electrician I guess?

Battery checked and Kwik fit said battery fine car needs a good run . Happened to need a 30 mile drive that day all was fine. Two days later problem raised itself.? Auto electrician I suppose or another battery check elsewhere as I can’t see doing a lot of distance driving for a while with COVID circumstances?
Trickle charger helps up to a point but frustrating not to find a definite answer?

Have you checked the age of the battery as suggested earlier by maxman

30 miles is nowhere near the time/distance to charge that battery..150-200 miles to bring it up from its flattened state..sounds like an ageing battery, until you address that issue and/or get a semi-professional level diagnostic device to check..even with the diagnostics history shows that most diagnostic errors arise from 2nd order battery related issues!

Had battery checked elsewhere and it’s fine the garage did a diagnostic and it’s showing a code A 694 fault which is haul sensor. I’ll contact an auto electrician ASAP hoping he can help. Don’t know if it’s a d I y job?

If it is a hall sensor, the 1series convertible is the same ,but cost a fraction of the price.Someone posted this a while back..How old is your battery?

Depends on your level of experience.
If you are confident working on car electrics, then it can be done. Depending on which one is affected it could be a fiddly job, and it’s not guaranteed to fix just by replacing the hall sensor. It could be a sensor and a microswitch.

If like me, you can just about wash a car (and make a rubbish job of even the wheels!) I would take it to an official BMW dealership or a well trusted indy who specialise in roof repairs to Z4s (I think there is one in Manchester).

Best of luck!

Tony, knowing which part of the country you are in you could always get forum member "bowser134" to look at it.

He's trading as RBM Hampshire in Hook, just of Junction 5 of the M3.

I replaced the battery yesterday. So far very randomly the red roof symbol appears so. It hasn’t been the weather to test roof operation a lot so I suspect an auto electrician is the next option having eliminated the battery which was the original in a 2011 car.
