Recurring ABS etc warning lights

Hi all
I'm getting these warning lights sporadically which once on stay on until the ignition is turned off and left for several hours. Starting up, the lights disappear after driving a few yards; sometimes they stay off, sometimes come back on again. A friendly local garage has told me it's the ABS pump which is stupidly expensive to replace so in their (unusually honest) opinion it's not worth doing as the car is still safe to drive and the lights can be switched off come MOT time. Is this right? My OCD hates driving with warning lights on and I'd rather them off without having to sell my children on ebay to pay for it. Any advice?

Safe, with no ABS, Traction control or stability control :o

Get a proper diagnosis. If it's the pump get it repaired, no need to replace.

This. :thumbsup: Can't belive what I'm reading. What sort of garage tells you a dodgy ABS pump is fine to live with and you should hide a potential safety issue for your next MoT.
 
Had my suspicions it should be sorted but not being mechanically minded I took their word for it. Will def get checked out by an Indy. Cheers both.

The pump was the last straw for me, there is a website called ecutesting.com who will sort it for you but i'd thrown the towel in by then
 
It's probably the pressure sensors on top of the cylinder , less than a couple of hundred quid to replace if you have a basic tool kit . As mentioned , if it's the pump get it repaired , search ecu testing I think the company is called , I've dealt with them and it's a quick turn around and again , not that complicated .
It's fine to drive the car with out abs and traction control , most of the wannabe track drivers turn off all the driving aids as soon as they go on a track , granted a few of them run out of talent and crash , but if you don't drive like a dick you'll be fine . Put it this way , if your dad is over 50 and didn't die in a car crash then he managed fine without abs or traction control for longer than you've been alive :lol:
 
Yep, guess not having ABS etc was standard until relatively recently and I haven't got the bottle to drive like a dick, well, that often. Also a bit tricky in the 2.0i. Thanks for the input Paul. Might have a word with my local indy (Walkers Autotech) and get their take on it.
 
I had the same problem , it was one of the 2 pressure sensors , I replaced both but if they can track it down properly with the magic that is computers they should be able to tell you which one it is , if it is that .

Same here - lights came on and went off spasmodically for several months - diagnostic test at an Indie ( £35 ) revealed one of the pressure sensors as the cause - easy to replace but as I'm a complete knob with spanners I had it replaced by the Indie ( £140 with labour ) - problem resolved :D :D

TBH as others have said this is a common fault - you would be extremely unlucky if it was the pump itself - bite the bullet and get it diagnosed - hope you get it sorted soon .
 
Thanks gov. I'm not so handy with a tool box either and I bet I could out-knob you on the spanner front! I'll make a call and get it checked out. Thanks for all the advice guys. :thumbsup:
 
the beauty of ECUtesting.com is that if they cant fix it , they'll only charge you £40 for looking into it, which is highly unlikley.

IF you d replace it though, dont forget to cycle the car 3 times before thinking its still broken :thumbsup:
 
Just looked them up Jamie - bit too much of a trek at the moment as they're in Derby and I'm in West Sussex! May give them a go if no joy locally.
 
Had much the same problem and took the E85 to a local Indie and he sorted it by replacing both sensors which he said was a fairly common fault on these cars.

You just post the module to them mate
 
Ecutesting.com fixed mine earlier this year if it turns out it to be the pump.
Cost about £300 and comes back with lifetime g'tee

You need to get the fault codes checked to see what's needed.
 
Hi, I have the same problem. Just sent my abs pump and ecu to BBA - Reman. they have quoted £150 to repair with a lifetime warranty and inclusive of pick up and return shipping. Good luck.
 
Just dropped off at Walkers Autotech for diagnostics. All things crossed that it won't send me bankrupt :?
