I'm afraid that the extra weight from the steel will resonate (on bumps etc) and maybe over time crack/tear the plastic, so I really prefer an aluminium one if that's possible.

Are you sure the rpi is 1,5mm aluminium?
It looks even thinner on pictures.
I know aluminium requires more skill to weld (especially thin aluminium), but I imagine that any qualified TIG welder should have the skills to do that.
The black example you have in your startpost, is that an aluminium pre-production one? (steel? aluminium?) or the original RPI?
