Quantum Remap on E89 20i

Hi guys,

Just picked up my E89 Z4 20i (2012) yesterday, looking to get a stage 1 remap done on it but i'm told it's not an easy one to do by the guys at Quantum. They tell me it's because of the way the ECU is positioned/ locked down by BMW. Been quoted £500 so wanted to hear if anyone in here has had their map?

How significant does the jump from 180 to 260bhp feel behind the wheel?

Cheers, Alex

It feels substantial 8)
It's the torque that forces you back in the seat, it's increased by virtually 50%....
Ps, mine isn't a quantum map-I went to see Imran at evolve automotive

It would be interesting to see how it performs against a stock 30i over a 1/4 mile. I think they are 254BHP?

It’s faster, I’ve not been on the drag strip so can’t give any proper data but it’s faster than a 3.0si which is slightly more powerful/lighter than the 30i.

When I had a previous car done it was 196BHP to 260BHP with a good torque increase which I cant recall ATM. I had an aggressive map done and got good peak power (Pub bragging rights... ) but it was not very linear and drive able compared to a more "tuned" map with a linear power curve. From my experience the two are hard to combine. Peak power and lots of wheel spin or linear power and more traction.

In hindsight id go for the Linear approach to next time or would advise others to do the same where possible...

A quick look at what PBondar posted shows that the final drive ratio is also different between the 18i, 20i and the 28i.
It is also different between the 35i and the 35is so that's another difference between them and not just a map.
In fact a bit of digging shows, assuming BMW's literature is correct:

1) 28i has different fd ratio in US vs Europe 3.08(M) 3.73(A) vs 3.08 for both M and A
2) In US both 35i and 35is have fd ratio of 2.56

So BMW spends more time fiddling fd ratio than most other things..I assume this is do to with some aspects of fuel consumption figure plus typical sweet spot for cruising etc.

With a 7 or 8 speed box it can't be particularly about pure acceleration unless dropping the final drive ratio helps overcome wheel spin issues off launch..

I worked in product planning in hi tech and why the spec of a product came out as it did was subject to a variety of issues: dealer feedback, price justification, known buyer behaviour, perceived benefits etc etc..

So just be grateful that you can remap a 18i/20i/28i all to around 280bhp safely...at some point after that you get into increasing probability of it going bang, it seems that 320bhp and 310ft lb seems to be the limit when combined with aggressive/sustained driving....imho

I'm sure Evolve's map makes 350ft lbs and ~255bhp on most 20i Z4s. They map for more torque than headline bhp figures.

I have a 20i and I am just about to make the decision to remap it. I wanted to ask whether with time, anyone came to regret their remap? Did it wear out a clutch quite quickly or anything?

Sorry to bump old thread. Appreciate your perspectives!

No regrets here fella. I got a lot of advice from people who'd remapped theirs before I went ahead and took the plunge. I went with Evolve in the end.

Totally transforms the car. Go for it.

Does it involve a pre and post Dyno? Are they writing to the ECU or is it a piggyback unit?
The job involves taking the ECU out apparently, they need it for half a day. No pre and post dyno but I'll be taking it to a dyno soon after.

To see the size of improvement, you need a dyno run before the map is carried out as well

That did occur to me actually but unfortunately my local dyno is booked up beforehand. Isn't it safe to assume factory spec figures pre-remap?

Booked to get mine done on Friday. Ummm-ed and Ahhh-ed for a while about it.

Hi, looks like you’ve had your 20i for a while now-how’s it been?
Rob

Still makes me smile, hopefully more so after Friday! Other than a SmartTop haven’t modified anything else.

Had to change insurance outfits, Direct Line was a straight decline for 41% increase - haha - so moved to Chris Knott today, wonderfully refreshing service from them.

How many miles has it covered & have you had any issues reliability wise? :?
