Quad Exhaust set up - options discussion

Hope this "get it translated" does not involve me

No - I have a much better job for you...

Under the rear centre of the M between the 2 back boxes is some sort of diffuser/in fill panel that runs from the bumper cover, between the back boxes and towards the centre reinforcement plate. Can't find it on Real OEM and can't work it out from the shots you kindly sent me.

Can you do better? :)

Ok, will lay on the floor again and this time with a camera rather then my Blackberry. At least I am not wearing office clothes this time :D

Ok, hope this helps:

Ah - perfect :D

I reckon I can get one of those into the remaining gap between the back boxes if I relocate the battery to the boot. All subject to the fitment of the diffuser on the earlier style bumper cover.

I'm still hopeful of squashing a smaller but powerful battey to the right of centre by the reinforcing strut, but giving enough room for the right box.

Glad this is not a car off road project until I actually start

Well I now have a new SBS40 'Race' battery on its way to me. Managed to pick up a new one for a fraction of dealer price. :D

The project can now progress on the basis of slimming the battery box and replacing the OEM 42lb with a 28lb and equal performance unit. Best news is I can now make this work without encroaching on boot space :)

Just have to wait for BMW to release the diffuser and a slew of ///M bracketry to arrive at the end of the week. Until then I'm stuck

I lost track a bit. Are you going to use your existing bumper now or the M one?

You won't have time for that next week, loads of underside pics and schematics of your ///M will be required for Phil to put it all together :)

Be interesting to see how it all looks.

you're molding the bumper towards the pre facelift lights right? I really want to do that as I have come across a cheap red 2006+ bumper...but I live in a small town (not sure how skilled the local paint/body guys are)

No - the current thinking is to mould the diffuser to the prefacelift (old style) bumper cover. This avoids the need to reprofile the bumper around the lights, which although my bodyshop tells me is no problem, I have reservations about the durability over several years. Filler always moves, shrinks, cracks when used in volume.

I'll know for sure once I have the diffuser to test fit

I've been curious about this mod (pre-facelift rear bumper/newer diffuser) and anxiously await your findings.

It's going to fit - like it or not. At the price it has no choice...

My biggest concern is if all the ///M owners start fitting non ///M parts to their cars to enhance them

Well 2 more bits came together on the project today.

The carbon fibre diffuser arrived from BMW as did a Hawker 12V racing battery. Only 3.8" a 9" so less than half the normal size but same power and a lot lighter too (28lbs Vs 42lbs)

The battery is going to allow me to halve the battery box and hopefully plastic weld it back together, mount the battery fore/aft and leave space for the new RHS back box. I need to visit the auto electrician Thursday to discuss terminals and cable reroute as I need to use different terminals.

The diffuser is a thing of beauty....I thought trimming it would be a nightmare, but an hour with some masking tape, accurate marking up and cutting has replicated the exhaust cut out on the RHS. I'm also happy that it will mate to the prefacelift bumper as they are exactly the same profile down low. The only difference is that the facelift has a feature line that the diffuser is templated along. I have yet to decide if I will build a fibreglass/ CF profile over the tp of the exhaust or leave it open. Will know when test fitted.

Sorry no photos as it's dark, wet and cold out there....but I'll put some up when I can get.

I'd like to know more about the fitting of that diffuser also as that is high on my shopping list.
Is it glued on and how much of the bumper has to be cut away?
