Quad Exhaust set up - options discussion

I'm hankering after the BMW CF one as it's not 'in your face' and it's a much more wallet-friendly way into CF than the roof.

I too like the BMW version

GP20 - Well a standard ///M OEM backbox weights 21lbs (42lbs the pair) and a battery 43lbs

Just going to an Odyssey is around 38lbs, but way smaller, while still a super heavy duty, up to 12 year life, etc. Need to work the weight of the OEM box, but that's a bit like weighing you head without chopping it off.

Race batteries could really drop the weight if required, but probably at the detriment of CCA and life

A question - the BMW diffuser - how is it fitted? It looks like it requires the standard bumper to be cut; therefore I assume it can't be taken off without a new bumper.

Am I right?

I have no doubt whatsoever that it needs extensive chopping of the lower edge of the bumper cover and therefore is only removable when a new replacment bumper is sprayed up and fitted.

21lbs sounds about right. I mentioned 25lbs off the top of my head. I went back and found the weights I got for my OEM M mufflers and they were 21.3lbs each side.

Hi GP20
You don't happen to have a weight for the OEM 'single' set up do you?
Talking of Pounds (Sterling not Lb) I was staggered to day to find a pair of OEM backboxed from BMW inc. 10% discount are £862 !!! Jeez they are going on for sure. Glad I got them for £21 the pair.

Project got a step close today as I ordered the facelift diffuser. Shoud arrive Friday :D

Custom exhaust shop took a look today and said my solution was very elegant (avoiding the side pipe branch) but his work was not of a high enough quality as in his words he does the tacky Hondas and Corsas for the city kids. Pointed me to the real pros in another town that make thm for the top end customs and classics, so that's tomorrows research job.

Sorry I didn't keep a record of the weight for the OEM Z4 set-up. So seems like you're going with the facelifted bumper + facelifted CF diffusor combination? Good choice. I think they look the best out of all the options.

As much as I don't think quad exhausts/twin mufflers are necessary (heck they're not necessary for the S54 either; BMW just did it for the looks), I absolutely applaud you for your efforts and your approach to do it the proper way instead of taking the easy (and ricey IMO) route and putting on the dummy pipes.

It was a long shot you having the OEM weight.
I'm going to see if I can mate the facelift diffuser to the prefacelift rear. Should be fun... Since so much material has to be cut off it may be doable and then saves the reprofiling issues for the lights and a bumper respray.

Agree re the looks - that's of course 75% of the reason and I don't think you can do a diffuser with dual left hand only pipes.

Yes - if doing it it has to be done right or not at all

I use this site for finding out part weight for shipping - http://bmwfans.info/original/

Are you asking about part #1 on this image (silencer with pipes for 3.0 Z4R)? If so, it's listed at 15.6kg.

The Z4M version is listed at 20kg for both silencers and 6.7kg for the 'x-pipe' - #1 & #2 on 1st picture and #2 on 2nd.

Good info. Just like to add that the weights listed in there include packing materials, boxes, etc.

He's looking for part #1.

Hi guys - been messing around at the exhaust shop today and a fabricator getting opinions and running test component fits and it's all doable :)
Need the diffuser before I can progress so we know ecactly where things will fit.

Yes i Was in effect looking a the weight differential between a pair of m back boxes plus new pipes and the single 3.0i rear cat back section
These numbers are useful (Cheers mmm-five and GP20) and I can guestimate a weight increase in doing the job. I'll be using a lower weight pipe than the standard M mid section (slightly narrower bore and high quality stainless) and also shedding some other garbage shields, giant battery box, etc.

I won't know until I finish and weight pre and post but I expect with a lighter battery (26 not 43) saving 17lb I'd guess + 10 M boxes, + 10 pipework less 17 on the battery and then equal on bits I lose + new bits gives an increase of say 5 to 10. Add the diffuser to that.

IMHO for a 3.0i auto roadcar it's not enough to worry about. For a track car I'd be looking to do things very differently

Batteries next

Go the OK form the exhaust guys on incorporating the M boxes, wher ethey need to run pipes and that various bracketry. Next it's back to the fabricator to shrink the battery box to an agreed max size or discuss relocation.

One option is a powerful but smaller battery. I'm aware of Odyssey but they are all the wrong shape in the power I need

Anyone heard of Hawker SBS40? http://www.ready2race.co.uk/shop/shop2.php?e1=Hawker as I'm toying with this idea. Less than 4"wide. Seem aircraft derived but now favoured by the race community.

Other makes to consider? UK suppliers of course.

There's Varley & Exxide to consider along with those two - all available on the Demon Tweeks website (for info only of course).

http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/products/ProductList.asp?cls=MSPORT&grp=MC136&pgrp=M004&tlgrp=MS005

Or how about a 'carbon fibre' one - http://shop.edoperformance.co.uk/braille-carbon-fiber-lightweight-battery-p-9356.html

Or super-light ones - http://www.voltphreaks.com/index.html

Cheers - I'd seen the Varley, but some other great ideas in there.

voltphreaks though, at up to $3000 for a battery :headbang:

Fair play to you for going to all the effort to have something unique
Thanx for using my pic for illustration earlier

cj10jeeper,

do you ever go to zroadster.com? When I was looking to swap facelifted tails some of the members had figured out the wiring diagram. I have no wiring ability so I did'nt really pay any attention plus it's in german :) I can find it if you want to take a stab at it.

It's not a site I've really looked at but thanks for the lead. If you do cme by the information do post a link or PM me and I'll get it translated

Current plan is to keep the pre facelift rear if possible as I do prefere the lights and if possible want to avoid changing them.

Deleyed in any further progress as the diffuser is stuck at the dealers until they finish stock take next week!!
