Quad Exhaust set up - options discussion

Must say that I prefer the "older" straight pipes over the newer facelift ones. They somehow look more aggressive to me.

Looking good CJ, just need to change that rusty screw thats holding you reg plate on :poke:

Good spot  Its been like that for a year and I'm sort of involved in a bet with a buddy over fixing it. OK - I'll lose the bet and get it sorted sometime soon.....

Swap it with one of his number plate screws whilst he's not looking

I disagree, but then I would! :P

One more step completed...
I templated the panel needed for the hole in the floor and had a pro at the bodyshop cut from 2mm plate and fit it. Decision was to go with bolting in as it's a non structural area and also reversible. I was somewhat impressed to see they etched it, primed and even colour coded Sterling Grey. Underside was stonechipped too. Sealed in and a secondary seal applied underneath.

Now it's in I can rig up a proper battery restraint system and route the cables correctly.

Just the boxes to fasten on now, but that's next week at the earliest   and then some tidying up, heatshields, etc.

OK - so you want to see the end result - Well here's a few shots to keep you happy:

Basically I opted to go from cat back and replace with custom bent stainless and all warranted for lifetime :). The guys at MIJ flanged the new mid pipes, so the correct ///M sport back box clamp fittings can be used. Also eliminated the central resonator that improves flow, It also makes it a separate system for cylinders 1-3 and 4-6, which they say is just fine and itself promotes a different sound. Perhaps not clear from the photos, but I managed to get the OEM heatshield in, modified to protect the side of the new battery box too and modify all the underpinning fittings to keep airflow correct.

The sound is awesome and by that I mean no excess loud noise, no drone, just a meaningful growl when I hit the gas and get the revs going, that fades as soon as I throttle back.

Few tidying up bits to go so ignore the 'wave' in the centre of the diffuser. I have to smooth the rear of the battery box off to accomodate the diffuser profile that at the moment is twisted slightly by the bolt to location. I also need to decide if I should paint the lower edge of the boxes matt black so they blend in (They are brand new, so a bit too shiny) and finally seal the diffuser to bumper cover.

Project met my criteria of being OEM look (how BMW shoudl have done it) and well engineered, fully functional and working (the GP20 test of all 4 steaming... ), no loss of power nor gain really sought, not excess noise/drone and fitted without loss of bootspace and no net weight gain.

Will get a better shot with the diffuser lit, but here's a few for now:

Top job there cj10jeeper

Looks great :D

When does the roof come off to enjoy the spring sunshine?

Cheers - Actually the roof should have been off, but I decided as it was in and out of bodyshops and the exhaust centre I'd leave it on for an extra couple of weeks. Also wanted a couple of shots with the roof on and no complaints from Mrs CJ that the new exhaust was too noisy. Taking the top off may have given her that perception.

VERY VERY nice
I love the fact that it looks so OEM.

For some reason I think the extra symetry of the exhausts means you need to change the drivers side rear light to a Euro version with the two white spots, just to balance things up.

Great job and looks superb! 8)

Herminator's comments above beat me to it- "symmetry" is the word and another double clear light would certainly do the trick!

Oh, that and "Eibach"! :D

Just need another 3" Mangowalk on the offside flank now :P

When can you squeeze mine in for the rear diffuser fitting :D

thanks for the positive comments guys

I can see the point re the RHS white spot. Where can I get that from as I've never really looked into that idea? I did lose the Z4 badge earlier in the week

Diffuser is a standard OEM part for single LHS exhaust, facelift model RRP is around £330. I can look up the part number if required. Check Breaker's thread as he fitted one to his coupe.

mmm-five I can't be allowing M's to pretend that they are something that they are not ...

Really impressed with the results of this - good to see, given the amount of time you've committed to planning and doing this mod, pics show it was really worth it

Hard to say about the boxes needing painted as most of your pics are taken from a low-down angle. Most folk will be viewing the car from a higher perspective so perhaps not needed. They'll tone down anyway with a bit of use/dirt I'd guess?

The end result certainly loks like it's been worth any blood, sweat and tears it may have caused, you lead the way the rest of us merely follow.

Looks awesome

Dread to think what the cost mounted up to :(

The quads look good but the DIFFUSOOOOORRRRRR = WANT ONE
