Quad Exhaust set up - options discussion

Eeeek!

I just couldn't bring myself to chop up my boot :D

Make sure to re-paint it with that corrosion protection stuff when done ;)

Can't wait to see the final result, feeling close now :D

Scrares me just a little sometime when the power tools hit something that I won't even park near other cars and cherish, but most mods turn out OK in the end.

You gotta believe it will be treated :) This car will be with me for a long time.

so is the plan to leave the battery under the boot floor or move it up like in the M? - forgive me if this is already covered in the previous 7 pages...

Move up and have a new smaller battery box I think

Nope, he's chopped his battery box up to take the new much smaller battery, so that it can still fit under the boot floor and have room for the exhaust to go around it. Even better than the M setup :P

Nope - that's it. By halving the battery box size and fitting the narrower battery I am able to get the full size M backbox in the void to the right of it. The whole purpose of this was to avoid losing the bootspace as per the M. All I need to do now is move the vapour filter that is to the right and behind the wheel arch and chop up some of the lower bumper cover, which gets done when I fit the diffuser.

It may still be a couple of weeks before I'm done, but it's one of those longer term projects and I don't want the car off the road for ages while done.

makes you wonder why they didn't do the same for the M versions :idunno:

Thats the biggest reason why I wouldnt want the M - loss of the boot space...

Well it was fundamental to me to keep the bootspace, so I can get a weekend hard case in and I need that when I fly, etc. It also seems the obvious engineering solution. My second choice would have been behind the front passenger wing, but that shifts weight forward  albeit good to have it to the left on a RHD.

IMHO the M was cobbled together in just that respect, ending up with the battery taking bootspace a whole slew of extra components from battery tray to clamps to carpet to build in and compromising stability by mounting 40lb of battery high up. Perhaps gel batteries are too expensive.

You're a far braver man than me!

Great solution to it - and as you say, better than BMW did themselves :!:

I wonder what this bumper:

With bottom piece in the middle thats open, would look like all filled in?
So an all out smooth looking bumper with quad exit exhausts either side :)

Any photoshoppers any good at filling in holes or making things look smooth?

Added the diffuser this morning and I think it really looks the part.

It needs a little 'easing' in the centre when I just bolted it into the existing fitting point in rebuilt battery box, but its caused the diffuser to bow slightly. Easy fix, but didn't notice until I took the pictures so it's a 'to do' for another day. There is a slight gap on each end as the profile does not exaclty match the facelift bumper, but I think I can work that later too.

Looking odd with only single pipes, but taking shape slowly, with only the vapour cannister to move, before plating of the boot next week:thumbsup:

Before anyone asks - I would not recommend this fitment unless you're confident, as it took some serious templating and cutting to work and fit, as there are no profiles to follow as per the facelift bumper and lots of 'easing' required.

Looks fabulous :D

I echo Mike's sentiments, looks amazing.

Feeling inspired to start some mod's just not sure where to start.

Was it that tricky or just a case measure, measure again, check, double check, have a coffee, check again and finally cut.

Good spot  Its been like that for a year and I'm sort of involved in a bet with a buddy over fixing it. OK - I'll lose the bet and get it sorted sometime soon.....
