Quad Exhaust Conversion for our Bruce... NOW FITTED!!!

Just a quick update on costs;
- insurance is £81 more (Inc £25 admin fee) through until end Jan - not bad
- exhaust job is £550 all in

I don't smoke, drink etc & just had to cxl summer hols due to work, so have convinced myself it's well deserved, after all life's too short not to enjoy..!

Very gorgeous.

However my only concern with this mod is the uneven length of the exhaust pipes. One of your exhaust banks (cylinder 1-3 or 4-6) will be affected by that; not sure how much by but I'm pretty sure there'll be a side effect.
If you notice any exhaust where there are two tail pipes they are of the same length even if they have to add extra twists and turns to acheve that unless there's is a shared chamber before the rear pipes.

I'd be interested in anyone else opinion on this.

Would be interesting to hear more about this before it goes in - anyone..?

Does anyone know what the part is that is directly behind where the new quad tail pipes will go? Its on the underside of the car and its got a black plastic casing around it.

When look at the underside of the car from behind, its to the right of the battery box?

Yes it's a charcoal filled vapour filter. I believe it's required for emission control when the car is new. They warm up the car and as the fuel expands this filters out fumes. You'll find it has connections to the fuel filler/tank and the inlet manifold. I removed mine when I fitted the quad, blanked the pipes off and have run with it for 2 years with no detriment.

In terms of exhaust pipes - yes it is important that all pipes are close enough the same length to get best performance out of an engine and in any event is best with a crossover too. Reality is it doesn't matter at this level of tuning/performance. The headers, etc.are all odd length is any event.

So if this charcoal filter was removed then it shouldn't cause any problems to the MPG of the car of testing at MOT stage etc...?

Has anyone else had this removed and is it a complicated job? The mecahnic from Longlife voiced some concern of the new tailpipes being very close to the filter, is this right?

Thanks

As I say I removed go to no ill effect. of course passed at least 2 MOT's since done. Took me 15 minutes to remove and cap off the pipes.

I had to remove it as a proper ///M box would not have fited with it in situ.

never heard of anyone else removing it, but then my mods are a bit different.

Hi is yours booked in to Longlife as well?

They've not mentioned any potential issues to me, it's booked in next week.

Everyday is a learning day here.

Presumably the M's dont have this then?

The M's have it, it's located more towards the center of the rear bumper instead of off to the side with the non-M's.

Thanks for your quick reply - is there any need to do welding or cutting of metal to remove the charcoal filter? Or is it just bolted in? What did you cap the holes off with? Sorry to be asking so many questions but I have to relay this back to the mechanic at Longlife :)

Thanks in advance,
M

Is this what might be in the way then

It looks like a pretty serious bit of kit to be removed esp. when its piped into the fuel tank? Maybe its just me being a scared lol

Item 1 in the diagram is the correct part.
It just onbolts. I then cut off the tubes at a convenient point, plugged them with a length of nylon like bar I had, then put a small clamp on the tube to hold it secure. Anything vapour proof and petrol proof will do.
I suggest not rolled up newspaper

Really is no big deal to do to get rid of it.

On my conversion I also cut off all that black part of the inner wing that is underneath the filter. That's exaclty where my RHS exhaust backbox sits, but every design will be a little different.

When you mention a nylon bar what exactly do you mean? And are the tubing just rubber rather than metal tubing? Sorry to ask so many questions!!!

Did you just mount the clamps back to the chassis again after plugging the pipes?

The pipes are a form of semi rigid plastic pipe. I simply cut them off found something suitable in the workshop of the correct diameter. I happened to have a nylon bar of the correct diameter. It's up to you to find something once you remove the pipe and measure the bore.
I cut them off near to a clamp so they were secure.

Would it be best to disconnect the negative from the battery before removing the filter and plugging the tubes? Any idea what diameter the tubes are? Thanks so much for your help so far :) really appreciate it

:)

You see them two metal bars running diagonally and meeting just in front of the backbox/battery box, what are these for exactly does anyone know??

I realise they are for structural purposes but can anyone enlarge on this? Would it be possible that these could work there way loose a little?
