There is a small grass area just in front of the front left wheel that is higher than the tarmac and he caught it on that. He's fixed it though. Interestingly BMW wanted £156 for that little bit!

Oh, if anybody has noticed, I took the grey number plate mount off and secured the plate straight to the bumper.
I think it looks tons better.
 
Finally got round to fitting the gaptech + module. Soldered in, not scotchblocked - ever!!

Took it out for its third run since last september, parked it overnight, and ........................following mornin....................back left tyre flat.

And to make matters worse, that screw looks like one of mine!! Might not be though. Can't believe I would drop a screw near my own car!

Took it off to my mates garage and told them to not scratch the new restored wheels or its death.
And this is what I hate. New sticky weights on, but leaves the old residue behind.

I have some of that residue from old weights, what did I use to get it off out of curiosity?
 
Old credit card type of thing works a treat as well! Plus the soapy water or some sort of bug / tar type remover.
 
I was hoping there was a better option than fingernail..... as that's what I used before and it got painful after a while :rofl:

The old credit card option is a great shout :thumbsup:

And here we go again..........

Car going beautifully. Sun, top down, showing off my remote hood up and down, and..............................

EML pops up and car goes into limp home mode. 20 mph max and sounds flat. Quick pinking on start up which seems to me to be timing fixed. Spark or valve. Don't know BMW's default strategy, but will soon find out.

Crawled it home for 5 miles and plugged in snap on ETHOS for quick and dirty code read.

Interesting.

Cleared code with engine off and it came straight back. Without engine running.
Now, I know that these engines are notorious for timing chains, but can't possibly be that since the ECU doesnt know any cam/crank positions till the engine starts.

So, back to VVT and the code.
Been a lot written about this so its time to prove the facts.

VVT gone into lockdown. Either because it doesn't know where the inlet camshaft is...or ...cant control it.

Stay with me here....... Ignition on, ecu tries to move valvetronic motor. Either moves it and faulty eccentric cam sensor cant see it, or...it doesn't move because it cant!

Next step then?

Plug in a good scanner (or INPA), bi directionally ask the valvetronic motor to move and watch the eccentric cam sensor signal on the scan tool. Simultaneously monitor the voltage on the motor itself on an oscilloscope.

If the motor is getting a good voltage and the eccentric cam sensor doesn't respond, the wiring and the various ecu's are fine.

Hopefully should be able to hear the valvetronic motor move...or not!

If signals to motor are fine, its either the motor or the cam sensor (or something mechanical has screwed up inside!). Don't go there yet!

Old school.....remove (or hear or feel) the motor and see if it moves. Check resistance between pins on motor.

i will try to film this.
Goal is to pinpoint fault without having to dismantle everything.

Really enjoyable read Andy, look forward to your updates ! I admire you, I can't knock in a nail ! Once my Children grew up and began driving themselves I bought my first Z4, a 2004 2.5, totally fell in love with it. Drove it as my daily for two years and slowly but surely it started turning into a money pit, roof motor, electric window, starter, rear springs, the usual stuff. Ended up making the mistake of day dreaming in the local BMW dealership last summer and drove out in a new one. I'm obsessed with her and spent so much of my spare time cleaning her and going on road trips with wifey. Keep up the good work ! Steve

Ok. Here we go.
Before the oscilloscope comes out. A few code checks.

Got back to my workshop where the car was abandoned in limp home mode, started it up and ....perfect. What!!

No codes present. Normal power restored. So must be heat related.
New direction then.
Removed top engine cover and disconnected the valvetronic motor here

Plugged it back in, cleared the code and disconnected the eccentric cam sensor

So looks as if the code 2A67 is a check of the electrical continuity check of the valvetronic motor.

Next is a current waveform of it in operation. With and without cam cover,
