Picked up a Z4 to get back into car repair and BMW

Has a list of issues so I will be back

- Seller reported smoke when revving and also reported by failed mot. I didnt see any when i drove it home. Odd

- Roof motor out and latches not unlatching

- Carpet is damp but not soaking

- Couple bits plastic trim missing - under driver side dash/side window vent and cover over roof latch motor

- Possible transportation mode - fan not working - ac not activating - rear demist not working

- edit - wipers move about 3mm on intermittent but when you put it on speed 1,2 or 3 it works fine - first thing will be dismantle and clean motor and full mechanism

Has had a new battery fitted

Fixed (woohoo) - Keys not remote opening doors - re-paired and 1 key successfully remote working

Passenger front wing,’ door and rear wing dinged.

Slight flat spot when you accelerate but happily powers through it

Jobs planned

- Cover those poxy side reflectors

- Nicer alloys 18 or 19

- Get an mot

Welcome to the forum and kudos for taking on such a high mileage 4-pot.
Plenty of us on here who can possibly help you source bits. For starters, try 'Street', 'bigwinn' and 'umfaan' as they have shedfuls of stuff.
I believe Chris (street) is actually about to break a 4-pot, so he may be able to help with a load of bits.

I doubt it's high on your priorities list, but I have a complete passenger door in Black Sapphire if that helps you at all?
Happy to hang onto it if you're interested, given that it's an expensive time of year.

I also have some of the lower dash panels if you could clarify which one you mean?

I have just picked up an 06-plate 2.0i to do up and use as a winter daily, albeit with a few less miles than yours, so if you need any help, support, wild guesses etc, then get in touch.

Yeh high miles but sounds surprisingly smooth and i gambled on it maybe being a replacement as its smooth running
 
Well as far as I can tell you just need wither a blank for the vent, or purchase a cup-holder to fit in there.
Those three warning lights are pointing to either an ABS sensor on one of the wheels, one of the DSC sensors on the master cylinder, or an issue with the yaw sensor under the drivers seat.
I think you'd need to check the codes to see which.
You can check the carpet under the drivers seat to see if it's wet. Hopefully not, as that would be pointing more towards a yaw sensor and the facelift ones ain't cheap!

EDIT: Just seen the -40 outside temp display. Pretty sure I've read that is linked to transport mode too.

This car would need to have been well under £1k to be worth the punt :?
The list of tasks or wants that will soon tot up to £800 / £1000 ?
I can't see the car ever being worth £2500 even with a fair wind & sun in the buyers eye so facor in the tools purchased & time spent you are wrestling a time bandit .

This assumes he's only in it for a profit.
When I do them it's very much a hobby which gets me out of the house and keeps me interested.
There's the fun of taking it on, beating all the little things they throw at you and keeping another one on the road.
I have made very little in the way of profit over the last couple of years but had a lot of fun, learned a lot, met a lot of great people and been able to use my accrued knowledge to help others out at a fraction of what they'd pay a dealer or indy.
Certainly many hundreds of pounds better off than if I'd taken up golf as a hobby that's for sure.

Not everyone is in it for the money.

Im in the middle of setting up my laptop and waiting for the c310 doofer to get the codes, i will try my generic code reader tomorrow just to compare all 3

I will carefully rummage under the seat who knows what might be down there.

£2500 would be good might wait u til the summer for the week of sun we get in scotland and sell it then and yeh was a fair bit less than £1000 but as said in my first line of my intro i plan getting back into cars and fixing them and BMW

So as enuff_zed said its not just about the money. My 18 year old son is showing interest and i use to enjoy the time stripping and rebuilding engines and cars with my dad and making a few quid. But its the long term skills you learn and other than my £50 a year MOT and tyres a garage doent get another penny from me so if i can pay that forward to my boy a loss leader Z4 aint a bad option

Hes got a 116d so we thought we would stick with bms

Last BMW i had was an e23 735 with a preheater petrol burner under the back seat that you could set a timer to turn it on in the winter - safe to say i never used that.
 
Welcome Zedfour4 - I’ve also recently taken on a project Z4. Had damp passenger carpet which turned out to be the membrane behind the door card was missing, letting the water get in over the door seal. Worth checking as it’s an easy job to do.
Also check your drain holes are clear as that can cause water ingress. You can get to them without taking the wheels off, it’s a bit tight, but you can just about do it. I removed the rubber plugs at the bottom of the drains then pushed a coat hanger up the pipe (with a rounded end) to clear any debris. Pour some water carefully at the corner of the roof and you should see the water come out.

I enjoyed the learnings I gained from my dad and i wouldnt be half the man and dad that i am without them
BUT he lived a very safe way of life and was the sensible voice with no risks or “wasting money”, the learning i got from this is that sometimes crossing that line and taking a bit of a calculated gamble can be fun. So its always nice hearing familiar comments my dad would have made and I would ignore.

And you know what, he always enjoyed working on these projects he had warned against.
 
I remembered another fault

wipers move about 3mm on intermittent but when you put it on speed 1 or 2 they work fine - motor and mechanism dismantle clean and rebuild required
 
Have you tried resetting? These could be historic.
Then try again and see what you're left with.
 
I have reset and will take it for a run to the mot station 😃honest officer
But after my 2 weeks in the sun

And the passenger carpet is wet but not soaking
 
If you're looking to cover up / remove the side reflectors I'm sure there will be people on here interested in them as they are quite difficult to get hold of I believe.
