private plates

Get yourself one - Ive had my initials and also meaningless but interesting ones - currently have a car specific one cos I intend to keep it for a while. The most I've spent on one is £570 and usually buy DVLA ones for £250 which includes transfer fee. I would recommend looking on the DVLA site first - other websites will appear to be cheaper but won't mention transfer fee and vat.

We had an MX5 which my wife thought a great deal about - she wanted to keep something of it so we decided we'd keep the reg.

We've used it for both our Zeds but it ends with FCU :o  Interesting and I've wanted to change it for something a little less err - objectionable but we've kept it. (Better choices about I'm sure  )

Don't spend a fortune just have some fun with it - it's a special car so give it a special reg.

Mine adds more like 20 bhp if I'm honest :)

I'm not so keen on the current format, unless its very clever and obvious that it says something. I much prefer the last format as they instantly stand out more, just by having less digits in them.

I think having your initials with a standard 7 digit plate doesn't show up to anybody who doesn't know you. I've noticed a few recently where for instance John F Brown goes for something like JB65JFB but it's not really eye catching is it ? Or the first two letters may be the Wife and the last three the husband (or vice Versa,) but this is usually with an 04 plate (i.e. AC04ABC ), like people used to write John 4 Julie !! K155 --- and M155 --- are frequent ones too

Current plates are ok if Mr Bagshot can get BA65HOT, or RH14NNA, etc but they've got to be obvious that they aren't standard. I've also seen a few plates for the ladies on the current format with MR5- for Mrs .... i.e. MR58RAY would be Mrs Bray

I'd much prefer the old style of M2JFB its short and sweet.. Alternatively I'd rather have something irrelevant but distinctively short like II XYZ. These are often available cheap at the DVLA auctions as apart from being irrelevant they come alphabetically last in the sales, when everybody has run out of money !

I once bought S1EAT and had it on my Seat Alhambra for a few years before selling it at a £1k profit to Mr Sleat. I've never lost money on any plate so think they are a good investment long term.

My son's initials are O.J. so years back I saw and bought 111 OJX (111 OJ x) and have been keeping it for him ever since, so I plonked it on the Zed to save on the retention fees, (before they changed it). Before that I had HAT55S on my last zed, which is now on retention for my daughter Harriet who's nearly 17 , as that's her nickname. I have one on my DD and so does my Wife.

I work on ANPR systems and I just find it all interesting for some reason ! I detect about 80,000 vehicles a day and can search them all, (but not without just reason - before you ask !) :D

My kids have them. I've never got it myself so never had one. I'd rather spend the money on Petrol and road tax. to keep her going through the winter.

Can you explain this on your car then 8usy ? (Looks close enough to me !)

Pure chance. I've been BuzyG for as long as I've had an e-mail account. The Zed just happened to have that plate. I didn't even notice the link until someone else on PH mentioned it months after I'd bought the car  . Very happy with the plate though. :D

I've got X3 followed by my initials, had it for about 10 years now on all my cars.

As far as 'waste of money goes' (several such comments on this thread!), I don't spend money on jewellery or expensive watches, so why should I get criticised for buying a private plate? I can't see the difference in terms of functional value for money.

Agree. It is an indulgence, but everyone spends money on stuff they don't really need occasionally. Life would be no fun if you didn't. My wife and I both have plates with the last three letters being our initials, her's S88 and mine W88, so they kind of match. Both birthday presents. When I got mine someone suggested I get W33 BNG on retention for my son (Wee Bing)... Might do that if it's still available and I have some spare cash.

I much prefer the look of mine with its private plate. Took a while to choose what to get but in the end went for R24 ALP which I thought was quite appropriate for a Z4 Alpina Roadster. Only cost me 250 quid so can't complain.

Each to their own - your money your choice but I'm in the waste of money camp. The thread did ask for all opinions so you can't get prickly about people having a different view to your own.

I like private plates, had a few over the years on different vehicles. If its a waste of money, then there is a suggestion that I might have a few hundred quid in the bank had I not bought private plates. Pretty sure that would never happen in my world.

We all make choices and decisions. How we spend out money is clearly up to us. It could be argued that having children, paying the rent, not shopping in Iceland, gambling, paying for sex etc is a waste of money . . . . .

I have one and I love it. This is the only one that was close to my name as my last name is Hines
And also it makes the car look half her age.

Very nice looking Zed!

For me standard number plates are too long, just think that shorter private plates look tidier, especially on a motor as cracking looking as a Z4

My son's initials are EWG and, when he was born, was nicknamed Earwig - so i bought a number plate to match. Its been on a number of cars since, and lived on #108 for the past few years..
