What say we go to the Poppy fields the weekend before the Poppy Festival, 4-19-08. I figure to go before the crowd does. Keep in mind that the poppies do not open if it is too windy. It will be a crap shoot as to what the weather will be, however if you never plan it , it will never happen. I will have a drive planned and meet points depending on who wants to attend.

Here is what the website has to say. http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=627

All are welcome to attend.

What say you?

Meet Point:

Blackbird Park
Corner of Rancho Vista Blvd and 25th street
Palmdale, Ca.

11:00 Am Saturday 4-12-08 We will leave about 12:15 for lunch ( depends on how much I talk)

We will have lunch at:

Panera Bakery
39403 west 10th Street
Palmdale, Ca.

We will head out to the Poppy Fields about 1:30. The fields is about 30 minutes out Ave. I .

There is a $5:00 selfpay fee to park in the Park. Cash

After leaving the park, I was thinking to have a dose of curves back to the 5. We have 3 choices at that point.

I will be taking the 57 north to the 210 west to Angles Creast Hwy ( 2 ) . I will be taking it easy through this area. There is a 76 and a Shell on the south Side of the freeway At the 210 and the 2. There is not much parking at either one so we will meet at the north side of the 210 and Angles Creast Hwy-2- at 9:30 leaving at 9:45. Anyone wanting to meet in Orange County. I will be at the Starbucks at 8:15 leaving at 8:30. Starbucks is located on Chapman just west of State Colege on the north side at 3743 Chapman Orange, Ca. This is just west of the 5 on Chapman.

Lancaster has a 50 percent chance of rain today 4-2-08, which should only help the bloom as Poppys are not a one time flowering plant. The 10 day weather is forecasting 75 deg weather for our drive.

IMZ4N, I'm game for this! what's at the poppy festival that we'll miss, food? How big could the "crowds" be since it's in the middle of nowhere? :driving:

either time is good for me, particularly since I'll be at a conference 3/31-4/2 - at the MGM in Las Vegas of all places! I wanted so bad to take your last run to vegas, but other events prevented me from planning on it. Then my boss tells me I have to go to this conference on ADP, and I start fretting over it - until I notice it's in vegas. that is one way to turn a frown into a smile.

Highway 138 between Lancaster and I-5 is your basic two lane rural road through the middle of nowhere (my apologies to any Neenach residents on the forum). Put a couple of hundred flower gawkers on it driving 30 and seeing the sights and it slows down in a hurry. I may check it out on my way back from Death Valley next weekend, but I suspect it's just starting to display. Down at the 1000 foot level in Ventura County I was seeing stands of open poppies this past weekend. The Poppy preserve is up around 3000 MSL so should be a couple of weeks later. First week or two of April sounds like a good call.

What in the world will you find to do in your spare time?

Two years ago we were up there and talk about tour buses and no parking. Not what we were hoping for.

vachss,

If you do happen to swing by, if you could post your findings here, I would be thankful.

Count me in as expressing interest...and God I hope I can make this one...sheesh. It's been forever and I don't know anyone in the group any more :(

I see how it is....I decide i'm not going and SoCalSizzle says she's going :P She must be psychic.

I think you need to get in touch with your female side and change your mind. :P

I would love to come but I am contractually obligated to attend the graduation ceremonies of the college at which I teach. Have fun all!

You remember, the little Itie girl. Wears 3 inch heels while shifting that blackish demond of a Z, and then changes to driving shoes in her trunk?

Remember now?

You know the one that likes towtrucks.

I bet you thought there was going to be a pic down here.

When she stops being a work -a-holic she'll show up. :fuelfire:

I can probably make this one, so you can add me to the list! I'll let you know if anything changes...

Here is what I am thinking.

Lets meet in Palmdale at

Blackbird Air Park
P street and 25th

Take an hour and tour the planes the to

Panera Breads
39403 10th street West
Palmdale, Ca.

For lunch, then on out to the Poppy fields National Park.

Getting to Palmdale.

There are people coming from San Diego (2), Redlands (1), Victorville (1), Orange County ( 3 ) and Simi Valley (1)
I am corrently checking on how people are planning on getting there to set up caravans if possible.

I was thinking of going to Palmdale via Angles Creast Highway to the N3 to Palmdale. This may be out of the way for some depending on routes taken.

With that said, I would like to hear some thoughts. Nothing is poured in concrete, so lets have some chat.

What thoughts does anyone have?

I would be up for taking the mountains to Palmdale, instead of Angeles Crest though what about Angeles Forest road? It is new to me, it probably won't have as much traffic, and it'll get us closer to Palmdale.

I think we are talking the same road. The entry point to the Angles forest road ( Palmdale cutoff or the N3) is the only difference. It's about 25 miles long and more direct IMHO. It would give us a few twisties before we head to the poppys and then have a dose afterwards.
