Poppy Fields 4-12-08

Quick report from yesterday at the Poppy Fields. Some fields along Hwy 138 in Lancaster have some color as shown below. The main field near the Fairmont Buttes (location of the actual visitor center) is still more yellow and green than bright orange, but there should still be some decent flower activity in 2 weeks. I can't say that it'll be a banner year with whole hillsides lit up orange, but I expect it'll be worth the drive.

Edit: For some reason the site isn't displaying the picture (though it does in preview). Here's the link instead: http://i.pbase.com/o6/35/380635/1/94666450.EGoTE2FT.sundayhwy138.jpg

I would love to see the pic. However it is not working for some reason. Thank you for the update though.

The official site of the Poppy reserve vistor center: http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=24984 also has some pics from a few days before mine. They seem to corroborate my assessment: Some decent wildflowers to look at, but probably not a "whole hills covered in orange" year.

vachss,

Thank you for the updates. Will you be able to come out to the meet when we go? I know that you have been there done that. Just would like to meet you.

IMZ4N,
I need some of your business cards. I keep seeing Z4's parked in the shopping centers up here! Might be able to recruit a couple! :D

Me too, perhaps next meet I can grab a few.
Have I just not noticed the Vegas folk that you gave the cards too?

Can do Matt. Caz4 got his this last weekend.

Nice. I'm hitting up every Z4 on base. Their windshield will have a card on it :P I moved my appointment on the saturday to Friday, so I may just try to make this event......I'm getting itchy feet (not trenchfoot)

How about a little preview. The winds was blowing from the north , so only the south facing hills away from the winds were blooming.

Hmm Masters weekend....

I have too many itches too stratch.

Golf
Motorcycling
Rallying
Honey-Do's

I will let you rank them in importance...
and only the wife's vote counts...

Ok, so you will be doing Honey-Do's to keep peace and sneaking in all of the Masters as you can, and a rally to the store and Motorcycling to take a break when your guy looses to Tiger. :P

The Wildflower activity in the Antelope is still pretty much at peak. Not a banner year with every field lit up, but still some good color. A couple of quick examples (with some obligatory Z4 content this time):

On 138 near Neenach:

Near Gorman on the I-5 heading in. Decent color on the hills, but not enough Lupine to really light it up:

And finally along one of those delightful Antelope Valley roads searching for flower fields off the beaten track (no need for Sports Suspension here):

vachss,

Thank you for all the updates, they really help.

Will you be bring the coupe out to meet some new roadster friends on the 12?

I'm with you on that one. I hope weather is with us on Saturday IE: no wind. When it is windy the flowers do not open. The pics were taken with a wind from the north, which ment only the south facing hills had blooms.

Weather girl said, it will be in the mid 80's and no wind.

Ok, the weekend is up and coming.

I don't want to be your mother or anything, however here I go. Just one of those things I must do.

Check tire pressures and all fluids. Bring your radio's and sunscreen ( expecially those planning to go topless ).

There is a $5.00 CASH fee to park in the park. The weather is going to be perfect ( if you believe the weather people ) . The temps will be in the mid to upper 80's and the winds are to be lite in the afternoon. It has the makings of being just right.

Remember H2O is your friend.

If you have plans to meet at spots other than the 210 on the north side ,parked along the road, let me know so I know to wait.

Retzz3 I will give you a shout when we get close to the 10 and 210 on the cell.

See you all there.
