Pergola build

I’ve learnt a lot doing this and got a bit more confidence to tackle things in the future.
I did that but maybe took it a bit far. I made a coffee table having done no woodworking before, before I knew it I had made this:myrtle house 2012 050.JPGmyrtle house 2012 049.JPGmyrtle house 2012 048.JPG

Then when I had finished that I did this:

It's got a bit out of hand for me!

Wow! Bit of a jump from coffee table to house!!

Looks awesome!!!!

The closest I’ll get to that is by putting a roof and some walls on the pergola!

It started with a raised veggie planter and now the pergola, which to be fair is quite a jump, but can’t see anything bigger on the horizon….saying that, I did tell Deb that I’d make her a walk in greenhouse!

A router is next on my list

If you’re planning anything major I’d suggest getting a 1/2’ router,
Something like this
https://www.screwfix.com/p/trend-t7-ek-2100w-electric-router-230v/307kg

If your only going to be doing a little moulding then a 1/4’ router would do, they aren’t as bulky or heavy as a 1/2” but obviously don’t have the guts or depth of plunge for doing deep cuts, which ever you get, as with the planer don’t be tempted to take too much out in one go

Thankyou. It would only be occasional use and probably small scale, so likely to start with 1/4 inch and experiment, I guess I won’t really know until I try one.

See, you're on the slippery slope. I made the kitchen above as I'm a tight-ar*e and a bespoke solid oak kitchen to buy was stupid money, so bought the machinery and had a go. I sold the machinery after for good money, then the chance to build the house came up. So ended up buying a whole new set of woodworking machinery!

Regarding routers; as Chippie above says a 1/4 router (I had a Trend T3 but it's now bust) is good for most things but a 1/2" is good for pretty much everything (as they come with 3/8" and 1/4" collet too) but can be a bit of a handful. Bigger routers can be undermounted in a router table if you are getting into serious work aswell.
www.axminstertools.com are the ultimate toy shop for anything woodworking IMO

The house is good for a 1st attempt 😂😂😂

My problem is space…..most things done on the patio which isn’t completely flat (hence some of my mitre saw cuts are a bit p1ssed 😂). Garage is full of stuff, mainly a commercial treadmill 😂 so need another shed….and so it begins!

We put the chairs back tonight and I had my Thatchers!!!!

Deb now tells me she wants some form of wind break on the side, initially thought trellis but going to see what’s available ready made before I commit !!!!!

Any advice on oiling the wood? Someone recommended Osmo uv oil?

Danish oil all day long. Osmo is ferking expensive and a bit OTT for outside IMO. Like the close up of the cider; makes me thirsty. If it had condensation running down it I would have driven the 300 miles to christen the pergola

It had been in the fridge overnight but I must admit, it didn’t seem really chilled.

Going to look into the oils….which danish oil, or doesn’t brand matter?

Danish oil is danish oil TBH

Went from a coffee table to a fully fitted kitchen with no woodworking experience.
Who wrote this then, do you have a twin?

I have been renovating houses as a hobby since 1996. The woodworking hobby started in about 2011. I made a coffee table as a trial run, then built the kitchen. Then moved (again) and built the house. Then moved again.

I have never said I am a builder or carpenter, because I'm not, I'm a refrigeration engineer. I do, however, have 25 years experience with renovating houses and all that comes with that. I also am not a liar!

Calm down dear nobody called you a liar.
I just found it funny that you said you started with a coffee table but had said you had 25 years of building carpentry experience

I don't know what you do for a living but for me carpentry is pergolas and the like and making kitchens/ coffee tables is cabinet-making. I am very calm and not offended (I offend others apparently) and try not to be a hypocrite. :D

Finally did the corner braces today!

It didn’t really need them, but I just felt it wasn’t quite finished as it was.

So hand sawed the offcuts of 6x6, then sanded and finally had to plane some of the top sides to fit between the beams.

Didn’t get pics after the sanding stage

Thankyou.

Yeah, we love it and I’m still in shock I actually built it!

Infra red heater!!!!

Powered by long extension lead at the moment, got to get power run to the pergola to do it properly.

Not the hottest heater out there, but seems to give enough, will see if it’s any good when it gets colder.

Not blowing sunshine up your arse but that’s a damn fine build B’dog….very impressive for a guy with little experience, top drawer sir….. :hattip:

My patio heater :) on a serious note I followed your your build from day one and admired your work so much it inspired me to get my tools out, nowhere near as complex as yours but none the less I’m pretty happy with the outcome.
