Orange 1.8

Napster just remember to some size matters, to others it's how you use it, in reality it's just 'sticks & stones...'

I went for a 3.0 because of all the six cylinder engines ever built, the BMW straight six is renowned as one of the best engines not only they but anyone has ever built in terms of design, durability, its sound, balance & a reasonable amount of umph.

If i lived in london, and mainly drove in the city i'd do the smart thing and go for a 18 (and try remap it!)

In reality when you are stuck in traffic, 30mph zones whether you have 50hp or 1000hp it wont get you to your destination any quicker!

I used to own a 2006 Mini Cooper S, 163 BHP, 0-60 in 7.3 seconds. Not the quickest in a straight line but serious fun to drive.

According to parkers.com the 1.8 has 153 BHP and 0-60 in 7.6 seconds. I can imagine it will still be a lot of fun to drive. As stated it's horse for courses here. Some people will want the 3.5 and its sub 5 seconds 0-60, but others will want a zed, as a daily commuter which has enough poke to put your foot down and have a bit of fun.

Look at the GT86, similar speed/ acceleration and less torque than the 1.8 E89, but it has received rave reviews from the motoring press. A good sports car is not defined by a big engine.

I think out of the 2 I'd rather have the MINI than a smaller engined Z4. The draw for me was the 3 liter 6, long bonnet sport car look and sound. For me the smaller engine would loose it's appeal. That's just me though.

Do I need a 3.0l straight six twin turbo engine? No! But it reads nice!! :P

At the end of the day we all have reasons to buy what we buy and in that sense, no one is right or wrong. :)

Yeh get with it you lot with big engines, you'll be telling me next that you don't have iPhones and Sky+ :o

iPhone, iPad's, iPad MINI, Mac, Apple TV and SKY + HD here and still think big engines rule! :P I even have my Mac ramped up to the max with RAM!! :P

Ive probably been slightly clumsey in the way I was trying to get my point across. I genuinely believe in everyone's right to choose. It would have been hypocracy of the highest order for me to criticse the 3 litres as my previous car was a 330 e92 coupe. I was simply trying to point out that some of the 2.0is owners have bought one as a pro active choice and not necessarily been forced down that route by budget or insurance etc.

Personally I wouldnt want the 1.8 but can see why some people would as the Z4 for me is mostly about the asthetics and the wind in the hair. I'm still running mine in and have only had the roof down once for a slowish potter through the Derbyshire dales where I live and had just as much fun as the rocket ship RS4 provided, as I spent most of my time in that trying to aviod killing myself and keep my license

I'm curious about your perspective... Why would you buy a 20i as a 'pro active choice', if money was not an issue? Why not go 28/35/is?

I guess Napastar could be talking from a perspective of not wanting to spend the money rather than not being able to afford the costs.

Oh, and BTW - my humble little 2.0 Z3 is way more fun to drive than my 3.0 E85, despite being down on power by nearly 80bhp.
Have to agree about the 'fun' thing. Just got back to France after a 1,200 mile round trip to the UK in my Z3 and loved every minute of it (appart from the UK traffic and crap roads). My Z4 is a smashing car and I love driving it, but for 'no frills' fun the 2.0 Z3 has lots going for it - and they are dirt cheap these days.
Scorp.

The few grand difference between engine sizes = more money in bank to put petrol in = more driving miles = money for hotels and other frivolities when you get there.
No brainer for me. Not for others I know but that is a good reason for some.

It was purely down to the enjoyment I got for the money. Ive loved fast cars since a trip in my uncle's 911 in the mid 70s, but being stuck in the car park that is the M60 twice a day over the last few months I had many hours to realise that the number of times I could really enjoy the types of car ive always loved was decreasing all the time and the money I spent on group 40+ cars and the petrol bill from <20mpg got me no further than the Toyota Aygo stuck next to me (no offence to Aygo owners!)

The 2.0is seemed a good compromise

Personally, I don't think the E89 is a pure sports car, so as a compromised but sporty car in whatever version people choose it can have an appeal. The 35is is a lovely car, very fast and audibly wonderful, but it would barely get me to work and back on one tank of fuel so it becomes an impractical car for me.. if I were to go for an impractical sports car I would probably have bought an Elise.

The 'pro active' bit for me in choosing a 20i M Sport was that either it or the 28i would work for my commute, but the 20i was 23.5k with 5 miles on the clock in the colour and spec I wanted whilst the 28i was over 4k dearer. So money is an issue, but only in the fact you compare what that money buys you. I could have bought the 28i but if I had chosen to spend 28k I thought that there were better cars for me at that price.

The new 18i would appeal to my wife as much as the 20i or the 28i, but for me it would be less performance than I like so it would have to be much cheaper to make it worthwhile. If the performance was the only appeal in buying transport I doubt many of us would have E89's and I'd not have sold my motorbike :D

Agree horses for courses I have a 23i and have just ordered a 35i which I got a cracking deal on :D but I only do max 6,000mls a year and when I retire will probably only do 3 to 4,000 if I would be doing more miles I would not have entertained the idea of the 35i and as this is probably the last car I shall buy just for me I may as well have a cracker :) the difference in fuel on that sort of mileage is small maybe a few hundred a year, and me and the misses have a Cooper countryman when we want to be a bit sensible although that is quite fun to,tried a 20i but I know I would miss the howl of the straight six so went a bit mad if they still made the 30i would probably gone for that the 23i is great sounds great but somtimes could do with just a little more shove :driving: :driving:

Dealer contributions on the new model are available but with reduced contribution but lower APR. financial is £3500 but with only 2.9% APR

The 35i is just lovely :D I absolutely love the Z4, the combination of the looks and the feel of the car are just wonderful, I just find the performance isn't my biggest reason for buying one... that said if I got a 35iS cheap enough maybe I wouldn't complain about the extra fuel stop on the way home from work!
