On the look out again!

Never used bluefin - my car is remapped by response. I'd check out DMS Automotive and AMD Technik. Had a quick look at Google and found Custom Tuning (www.bmwremap.co.uk) in Bradford that claim a rise from 177bhp to 208bhp. Not too far from you Senwar.

I have the 1 series coupe as a company car. 120d too.

I am seriously impressed with it. Tax is 3/10ths of naff all, it'll do an "officer, I'm sorry" turn of pace, I get circa 500 miles from a tank, and the four pot diesel is suprisingly smooth. So much so that a friend who has a E series diesel merc commented on how much smoother it was than his. I've done 35K plus stress free miles in it, in a years ownership. It's a relatively rare car too - I seldom seep many Coupes. Loads of the hatches though.

I test drove the 123d as well, and whilst it was noticeably quicker, it wasn't that significantly quicker to justify the extra P11D impact - for me anyhow. I looked at the current crop of 3 series diesels at the same time, but the coupe looks fugly (IMO) - and I'm just not that enamoured with how big it's got.

I guess I'm lucky that I have both the 1er and a Z4MR.

I used to have a 118d M sport...car.
great
RE remapping...a company called celtictuning (google them) get the best results by far from diesel engines and work all over the UK.

If I cant fine my z4coupe soon I think that I shall be jumping on the 1 series coupe and getting a nice 135i M sport.!

So, theres me saying it's a relatively rare car...

... my mate Mike who has run M3s (various) for the last few years has just ordered a 135i in White with pretty much all the shopping - it's on finance and he got a great deal, within £5 of the finance on a 2nd hand one (don't ask, because I don't know)!

135Ci

Frugality and low tax and so on, don't really add up to that much when we consider depreciation, and the diesels will depreciate more than the king of the hill 35i :) (imho)

To make the diesels pay you have to do mega mileage too.

Personally, I think buy a diesel if you want to save money, and buy a cheap older car to do that too. Buying a nearly new expensive car, and getting the diesel over the petrol to save maybe £50 a month, when the car depreciates at £500 a month, seems, err, wrong :D

Don't take offence, just my 2p ;)

If saving money is important, buy an old 330Cd or something.

If you want a cool car, a 135Ci is the way to go... stunning, rare, hold their value really well (offsets the not so bad, but higher than 123d running costs). As soon as they get near £15,000 I'll be having one with a Birds sourced diff and a remap!

As for remapping a diesel, I'd always get the best diesel you can get first, before resorting to remaps for more power. Remapping hurts insurance, residual value, increases component wear rates, and costs a not insignificant amount to get done. Buying a better model to start with might net you better residuals, more standard kit etc, for a very similar overall running costs point of view :)

Sorry, we must be looking at different 135i coupes, because the 1-series coupe is disgusting! You'd be far better picking up a second hand 335i, in my opinion. The 135i will drop like a stone compared to the 335i.

It's all opinion IK but i'll take that bet. A 135i coupe will perform better than a 335i. Let's try and remember to look in a couple of years time and you can donate a few pounds (shall we say £10) to a charity of your choice! You may not like the 1 series coupes but they are rarer and get better road test reviews (from a driving point of view) than the 3s. This will add up to Joe Public realising this and ultimately the values holding firm over time.

Of course i might be wrong - my wife will tell you that it wouldn't be the first time!

I've come around to the looks of the 1-series coupe myself, wasn't that keen until I saw one inthe flesh (don't think pics do it justice). I still prefer the looks of an M Sport'd 5-dr 1-series though and I'd probably be driving a 130i if I needed more practicality than the Z4. BMW don't do the new twin turbo engine (the 135i engine) in the 5-dr 1-series, do they?

And on the performance diesel debate, I came from a "performance" diesel - a Seat Ibiza Cupra TDI with 158bhp/245lbft, 0-62 in 7.4s - buteconomy wasn't good enough to counteract the disadvantages of a diesel: the noise, the heavy front end, the narrow powerband, the (at the time) more expensive fuel. I only managed 44mpg for the same driving that my 3.0i Z4 returns 31mpg on, and it's a price I'm willing to pay!

IIRC gwatson who used to own a supercharged Z4 on here changed to a 123d and I'm sure I've seen comments from him on PH about the poor economy it gets. Not sure what defines poor, but for me I'm losing faith in quick diesels now that petrols are becoming much more efficient.

Some interesting facts and comments here guys - good to read.

I know someone (hollpe) who went from a Z4MR to a 135i and he thinks the 135 is the superior car. I do agree the looks are very marmite, but I'm a fan.

The reason I've gone for the 120d over the 123d (haven't considered the 135) is because I've given myself a budget and am sticking to it. Talk of depreciation is all well and good - but don't forget I bought a Z4MC from new - so depreciation isn't foreign to me! And to be honest, I could lose the whole value of the car, and it wouldn't be much more than I lost on the Z in 2.5yrs! :o

I'll be doing quite a bit of mileage over the coming years. For example my parents have moved to the coast, and worked out it'll cost me about £25 compared to the £50 in the M. So at least I'll be able to go out there more as well

Thanks for this info - good to know some real world thoughts.

I've thought the same re: the 123d - obviously it is quicker, but in all honesty, the older I'm getting, the less bothered I am about lightning fast pace. If I was, I'd have kept my M.

I know some people think I'm mental going from an M shortly to this - but I'm happy with it, and quite looking forward to it too. I loved my M, will certainly have another one day, but in the 5 weeks since it went, I've not missed it at all.

New price (not sure what they are actually bought at) vs current residuals already looks to be telling a different story, from what I can find of 135Ci's for sale at all!

135Ci isn't a white good for the usual BMW buying public, it'll be a cult car with residuals kept alive by a good second hand demand for a proper pocket rocket with oodles of potential. The 335i will have it's time as the 'best' current 3 series bar the M model, and then will join the depreciation train south like everything else.

We will see anyway :)

Cheers, Dave - i agree! Hopefully IK will be donating a crisp new tenner to charity in a couple of years time.

Well, finally picked it up today, and liking it on first impressions that's for sure!

Nice motor, good cruiser, nippy, and averaged 56.5mpg on a 95 mile journey back from picking it up!

Gratz!

Looking forward to the phots and your final spec! Because of the crappy weather I drove from Warrington to Winchester at a relatively sedate pace today - 58mpg!

:D

You're not actually far wrong - been pounding it down since yesterday and all through the night!

Sun seems to be poking out now so I'll take some in a bit. The dealer kept saying 'you've got a right deal here as the garage priced it wrong on the internal system' blah blah blah. The plus point is got a 4 month old motor for £7600 less than it would have been new, so I'm happy!

Sounds like a great car.
I'm looking at the hatchbacks a bit further down the price range. I try to think of alternatives to the 1 series diesels, but nothing seems to tick as many boxes.
They're faster than most diesels in their catagory yet have better fuel consumption and they're RWD :driving:

Wish I could afford a coupe, but I'm "trying" to be sensible

Arghhh, quoting mpg as a key feature of a BMW... my eyes my eyes.

What about the response, the sound, the delivery of power building through the revs, the balance of the chassis against the fluid engine output? ;) :D
