You're right. In 1986 F1 cars had 4 pot engines. Engines made by a company called BMW.
No one really knows how powerful they were. But estimates from the time were that the Brabham BMW, which was a 1.5 litre 4 pot (turbo), produced around 1,500bhp

And that will be a shame...As one of the only manufacturers that where holding onto large capacity NA engines i think made them stand out amongst the rest...
There has been some brilliant 4 cylinder engine built over the last 30 years...getting any decent power out of them is a problem though.

I'm against them even if it just because I like thinking in my head about 6* pistons flying around - but merc are doing a good job with 4 pots ATM. Have a look into the cla45 amg, very impressive. They just all have the generic sound out of the exhaust, same as the slks, s3s, tts...

I think it's a tricky one I currently have a V8 & owned two other V8's & I love more cylinders & a higher capacity engine but they don't make much sense nowadays, I agree regards the sound of the tts but ours is pretty much as fast as the M3 but doesn't screw you for £490 VED & it does better than 15 to 18 mpg so I can see why everyone wants soulless 4pots on their drive as opposed to a smooth gutsy larger engine in this day & age.-Tom- said:
