OMG my quad sound / facelift light rear look :)

No idea what all the bashing is about on four cylinder engines

Even Ferrari made a classic four cylinder

.....and they have four exhausts too

You're right. In 1986 F1 cars had 4 pot engines. Engines made by a company called BMW.

No one really knows how powerful they were. But estimates from the time were that the Brabham BMW, which was a 1.5 litre 4 pot (turbo), produced around 1,500bhp

Thats what i was about to say!!

In 5-10 yrs everyone will be in a 4cl. Wouldnt be surprised if we even see an M car in the not too distance future with a 4cl.

Agreed...

And that will be a shame...As one of the only manufacturers that where holding onto large capacity NA engines i think made them stand out amongst the rest...

There has been some brilliant 4 cylinder engine built over the last 30 years...getting any decent power out of them is a problem though.

I'm against them even if it just because I like thinking in my head about 6* pistons flying around - but merc are doing a good job with 4 pots ATM. Have a look into the cla45 amg, very impressive. They just all have the generic sound out of the exhaust, same as the slks, s3s, tts...

I'm happy to settle for a (relatively) older car for my next car, if it means I get another 6 pot

Anyway, we've gone way off topic. Time to start another thread about Jonny's exhaust me thinks...

I think it's a tricky one I currently have a V8 & owned two other V8's & I love more cylinders & a higher capacity engine but they don't make much sense nowadays, I agree regards the sound of the tts but ours is pretty much as fast as the M3 but doesn't screw you for £490 VED & it does better than 15 to 18 mpg so I can see why everyone wants soulless 4pots on their drive as opposed to a smooth gutsy larger engine in this day & age.

I couldn't have said it better Lee. Guess us lot that haven't had the chance yet to have big engines for years due to age will just have to suck these facts up and cry into some tissues. Ha!

I do think its a shame & I think we shouldn't be bent over a table just because some of us enjoy a larger engine it seems unfair in many ways to me & I agree I am quite old school & love big gutsy powerplants & I feel for the younger driver full stop as insurance on its own is a challenge without even thinking about other running costs.

I am getting to the point of looking at cars that offer reasonable performance & relatively decent economy but like you I've always appreciated a nice smooth 6 pot or similar. :driving:
