North Wales Run Sunday 11th April

Best bet is for everyone to buy PMR 446 standard radios
Just had a little look on eBay, and they seem to range from a tenner to 150 odd quid... Yikes! Might be a bit rich for me this time round, but one to think about for the future, definitely

Can't come - forgot I was out of the country that weekend

If walkie talkies are looking useful I can drop them off with someone else though to use for the meet?

Aha, just found some info on the Binatone Latitude 100's that were posted earlier on - turns out they're PMR 446, albeit a bit low powered.

Basically any walkie talkie which is also PMR 446 will work with them, though the review on the Binatones isn't great. There are loads of different models available on eBay, Maplins and online :)

I used to have some Alan PMR 446's for inter-bike communication and they worked well - unfortunately I lent them to a friend and haven't seen them since :)

Had a good drive in the MX5 today. Route looks fine with just one detour at present due to a closed road. MX5 was great if a little limp when it came to overtaking :) Still, nobody passed me or even caught me on the open roads today so I must have been making good progress.

Itinery ( will provide more detail nearer to the day) I've tried to combine some great stretches of driving road with more scenic bits in between. I've also avoided the narrow single track roads in case we do get 15 or more cars turning up.

9 30-10am. Meet at Asda, Queensferry. WC & fuel.

10-11am. run through to Ruthin and then Llyn Brennig, highlights will be the Nant-Y Garth pass- great set of twisties & the Cerrigydrudion road, one of the best roads in Wales!

11- 11.30am Brief stop at Llyn Brennig for WC and great photo opportunity on the road overlooking the lake. :)

1130-12 30pm run through to Bala, the Evo triangle ( well most of it)and the mountain road over to Llyn Celyn.

12 30- 1 30 Bala. Lunch can be had at various places including a chippy!

1 30pm- 3 00pm From Bala we take to the back roads then the A5 to eventually reach the edge of Llangollen which we avoid and drive over the horseshoe pass, we pick up the Ruthin road again and re-do the Nant Y Garth pass- a chance for those who messed up on the hairpins to do better a second time!

from Ruthin head for Queensferry with a couple of detours to end up crossing the Dee on the new bridge ( a very mini version of the Millau Bridge)and finally stopping at a new services for coffee (Starbucks), fuel and WC - all optional. Then it's goodbye and head for home at about 3 :30pm :D

Need to nip in to Maplins this week to pick up bits to build an AUX lead, so 10-1 I'll walk out with a walkie too!

Route sounds awesome, sammyz... Can't wait :driving:

is there a limit to how many people can connect on these walkie talkies, what happens if we are all trying to talk at once?

Everyone can talk at once - just like the old CB radios. It just needs a bit of discipline to make sure not everybody speaks at once :)

Not sure I'd necessarily buy from eBay, the Maplin ones look quite reasonable: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?menuno=12586

The Terrain M550's at £29.99 for 2 look quite good. They need the desktop charger and don't run on AA's though by the looks of it, so you couldn't buy a pair and split them between two people.

These work out quite cheap too: quad-pack Cobra MT600 if 4 people wanted to share that'd work out at 15quid each and they run off AA batteries, so it wouldn't matter too much who got the charger :)

I think I'll give my mate a nudge and ask for mine back! :)

Don't worry I have. I will have a full tank this time!

All sounds good Sammy, looking forward to this :)

http://www.alan-uk.com/midland/products_bluetooth_pmr446_radio.shtml

they don't stock it any more, they should be getting something similar in the next 3 or 4 months, so for now i will go for a stadard walkie talkie, i will go to maplins next time i am passing

Ah that sucks! I didn't realise you were serious actually! I'm guessing that one's about 200+ quid.

You can also plug in earphone/mic with most of the radios, together with the VOX option it will automatically "key" the mic when you speak. Some radios have more levels of VOX sensitivity than others, I'd suggest looking for one with a few levels of sensitivity - though my experience of it was on a motorbike where there's obviously a lot more wind noise and the sensitivity was difficult to get right. I suspect it'd work quite well in a Z4 which are a lot quieter :)

HEEEEYY GUYYSSS
Really sorry for not being around the past few weeks...mixture of lots of revision and negative internet...
So 11th of april yehh?? Sounds fab to me! I'll have a read on the thread to catch up on news etc and plans
But i ll see u guys there!! :D
