And did say the headlight washers are part of an MOT if they're installed on the car?

Correct, if headlamp washers are installed they must work otherwise it's a MOT fail

Also said something about the brake fluid is over-due a change and should be done every two years? And the engine oil should be done annually? Mentioning to check on 'honest John'

Correct that the brake fluid should be every two years but bmw used to say if he car was being taken off the road then to disconnect the battery as this stopped the clock and could prolong he life of the fluid but I'd always have it done at two years. As for oil this is again every two years or when the dash tells you. It's most defiantly not every year!

Funny I was speaking to someone yesterday who took their car to another garage and the boy there told them they only needed a 'mini' service and will need the full works next year which is utter BS. Pointed this out and he said I'm only going on what he told me and I advised what he'd been told was kak and pointed out what should have been covered in his service.

Angie4m, Thanks for the reply and info  I know very little about the rights and wrongs of servicing and when fluids should be changed etc. (other than when the car tells me! )

Appreciate everyone's help on here, would be lost without you lot!!

Angie is correct, but I've never heard of the disconnecting the battery to stop the countdown. Service book says every two years so that is what I would stick to otherwise you will have issues come sale time.

> 'm needing the car tomorrow but can't get hold of the garage to find out what's happening?!

Have you tried phoning the electricity dept?

Agree that every 2 years is fine for brake fluid change and usually not at all critical at this stage, unless the car sees regular severe use such as track days or water ingress has occurred. Regarding engine oil change, every 2 years or 15-18,000 miles is the usual manufacturers recommendation for this these days when using fully synthetic oils. I would never consider leaving it this long as oil and filter change is one of the most important things you can do for an engine. My own protocol is never more than a year between changes or interim changes halfway through the manufacturers recommended miles, whichever comes first. I've used this rule for years, even when oil change recommendations used to be every 6-8,000 miles, and it's served me well.
