No sign of life!!

Recently I had all 4 tyres replaced on my zed, and while the wheel was off the guy mentioned the rear suspension coil had broken. After getting a couple of quotes, I booked it in with a BMW specialist in Andover, where I live, to have both rear coils replaced along with getting my leaking headlight washer looked at.

Dropped the car off yesterday, Friday, with expectations to pick it up later today. However, I got a lovely phone call from the garage saying that both rear discs needs replacing along with pads as they totally worn and are now damaging the disc! Nightmare!

After pricing I agreed for the work to be carried out and parts to be ordered.

I'm now sitting here at 1700, having had no word from the garage saying to collect my car? Have rung them numerous times, with no answer. I've called round the garage twice and found no one there with the office shut along with the workshop! No sign of my zed or any form of life?!

I'm needing the car tomorrow but can't get hold of the garage to find out what's happening?!

When did you originally agree to pick it up, and given that they had to order parts when did they say they would arrive?
Most garages only work til lunch on a Saturday

The garage assured me the work would be carried out and finished today. Was told parts were ordered last night and delivered to them by 10:30 this morning. Am clueless as to what's happening!

This is pretty unlikely to be true (assuming you passed your last MOT with no brake advisories) unless you drive like a total maniac or the brakes have been damaged in some way. Discs wear out very slowly and pads will trigger the wear indicator on the dashboard if they are dangerously low.

Maybe they just assumed that you wouldn't be picking it up today because of the additional work? Either way, shoddy communication by them and I hope you get it sorted quickly tomorrow. Maybe go there first thing and ask for a courtesy car if the work isn't done yet?

I can imagine the frustration
Its gonna be Monday now so make other plans
As for the work done ? Ask for the old parts back & post up some pics
Not sure what they quoted you for the brake work but rear discs shouldnt be that expensive on a 3.0 :?

Bet they won't be able to find the parts.

Cheers for the help guys. The MOT is just about up, need to get it done within the next couple of weeks. Will be the first under my ownership. Previous came back with no advisories, which is why I was surprised about the phone call re: the brakes. I've done 6,000 miles in my ownership and, I think, 8,500 since the most recent MOT.

The garage have since been in contact though. Apparently the wrong disks turned up this morning, so the guy had to drive to Southampton, 1hr away, to get the correct ones. He claims he did leave me a voicemail, but guesses he must have misdialled as I haven't got anything on my phone! Also, can't understand why it took him so long to go there and back?! Bit of a joker, will definitely be asking for the original discs back!!!

Work is being finished tomorrow morning and I should be able to collect around lunch time, fingers crossed!

Was quoted £163 for the brakes, including labour and £200 for the springs, including labour.

So last time you use these cowboys? :headbang:

Total around £360 ? I wouldn't say you had been fleeced , they have made around £200/£225 for their time + parts for possibly 4 hours work
The same jobs at a main dealer would have been more BUT you would have had the warm feeling of dealing with BMW
Surprised they are working Sundays tho ?

First thing I do when I buy second hand car is remove the wheels to paint hubs and callipers and inspect pads and discs and twist and pull here and there to check for any free play i.e. bearings and ball joints, suspension units and brake lines etc, and rectify anything that needs attention. Maybe you should have gone down to garage and asked to look at discs and pads before giving the go ahead to get the parts.
Most forum members are real diy enthusiasts and learn more from other members, main thing is get to know your car then you will recognise when a garage mechanic is trying to pull the wool over your eyes. Its sad but its not a pretty world we are living in today.
Hope you get back on the road ok. all the best. Baz :)

So I picked my car up today at about 1:00, work on the brakes and suspension completed. The leaking headlight washers are still to be completed as more parts are needed. Total I paid for the work done was £439 including VAT. The cost for the headlight washers will be another £110. I think quite reasonably priced?

And did say the headlight washers are part of an MOT if they're installed on the car?

I did manage to see the old discs and pads that were on the car, pictures below of the disc...

They also painted the wheel hubs and callipers on the new ones, which I wasn't expecting! Just gotta do the front ones to match now!

He did mention the car is in excellent condition for it's age and looks as though it's hardly been out in wet weather, which was good to know! :)

Also said something about the brake fluid is over-due a change and should be done every two years? And the engine oil should be done annually? Mentioning to check on 'honest john website'?

Yes those discs do look as tho they've seen their day, sounds like car is in sound order which will make you feel better. If your not comfy with diy you just need deep pockets. All the best Baz
