Next Car

I would personally love an R8 V8 myself. 420hp sounds just about right for our narrow twisty roads.

I still dont understand the obsession with the R8. They are awesome mechanically but are missing the X factor big time. The interior looks shoddy as well for a car of its stature. Its missing the madness associated with cars in this category.

996 GT3 is definitely no faster than the Z4M (been up against two different examples with two different drivers on two different tracks and beat them both), and the 997 probably isn't much faster (one only on one occasion and beat it after a bit of a struggle). The GT2 however...

As for the 420bhp V8 R8, it's almost 2 tonnes of car and similar in performance to the ///M (at least up to...err..."sensible" motorway speeds), so it would have to be the V10 to really feel special.

The R8 V8 Coupe weighs about 70kg more than a Z4MC according to this: http://www.audi.co.uk/content/dam/audi/production/PDF/PriceAndSpecGuides/r8.pdf

2 tonnes?? where are you getting your facts mate... R8 is 1550 kg... the Z4M is 1450 kg.

I was sure I'd read somewhere that the R8 was over 1850kg... You guys are right though, 1560kg for the V8 and 1625kg for the V10. Still, it's very similar in performance to ours at motorway speeds in my experience!

I can confirm this...with the same driver the 996 GT3 is equally fast... And thanks to my AP brake's I could brake at the same brake points.

There will always be cars that are faster than you... Sometimes you have to say; "I'm happy with this car". In my opinion get something that's fast and also entertains you. For me personally; if the 0-60time is around 5sec, then I'm happy... Is it faster; ok that's great but that's not something that makes me want a car. Mostly I want a car that's fast and entertaining and has some kind of emotion... A GRT is really fast, but I found it a little boring and artificial to drive. In comparison a manual Audi R8 is a more rewarding drive. If I had a Audi R8 V8 it would not bother me there is also a R8 V10. Talking about GT3 vs GT2. Personally I would rather have a non turbo GT3 then the GT2. I would trade in my Z4M every day for an "equally fast" GT3 997, but not for a GT3 966 (because it's so ugly)...

Oh yeah... so what on earth do you do if starts to rain!
Have to see about that :P Normaly I only do trackdays when it's not raining...and on the NS you don't have to wear one.

...and here's me on an airfield track day in December:

Although, I'd carried far too much speed into this hairpin and overshot the apex...

(it was getting dark at the end of the day; I was tired; pads had lost their edge; it was nearly Christmas...excuse, excuse :D )

LOL, you may have been "up against" some GT3s on a track day, but I've tried a Z4MC against GT3s in a proper competition, and there's no chance. Bear in mind they're over 200kg lighter, and pushing out somewhere between 380 and 420 bhp. To beat them I'd have to fit a supercharger...

Agree on the R8 though. I love them, but it would have to be a V10 to be an upgrade.

thanks for all your comments - big help.

all great cars no doubt, but there is little that can match the pace, space and comfort of the M6 for the £'s - Peddy - i will look at the cheaper ones, but my thought process was simply that the best example i can afford will be the most reliable due to age and lack of miles??? that was the theory anyway lol.

And youl probably loose the most money. Especially with the new M6 right around the corner. But up to you, if i could afford it I would do the same  but with the new model I might be inclined to wait as the prices will reduce further. May bag yourself a bargain!

But then again the new one will give you 30mpg+ with supercar performance I would also wait and see how much these drop in the first couple of months! Obviously not into the £40k region but might be worth spending the extra on the newer car.

Get the BMW warranty and you're laughing... :D

Not sure the 996 GT3 is more than about 70kg lighter and 380ish bhp in standard road spec, but I agree the power to weight ratio is in their favour and the brakes should give them a significant advantage (not to mention Porsche's engineering capabilities). Maybe I should swap cars with the next GT3 driver I see at a track day and see what happens :D

I'd be interested to hear about how you feel the ///MC fares in competitive racing as I'm hugely impressed with it's track capabilities (although understeer can be a problem). My previous track experience is limited to my seven...I fear we are in danger of digressing from the OP's topic a bit now
