I don't want to start an argument here, but:

The S85B50 is the engine, not the gearbox... The engine is bulletproof. the gearbox too. There has been two, yes, you did read correctly, reports of gearbox failure on the M5 board. That's pretty good in my book. The so called "red cog of death" is not an issue with the box, but usually with the release bearing and BMW will cover it under warranty. Sensors, schmensors - they are covered by the AUC warranty - last time a lambda sensor went pop on my E61 M5 I dropped the car in the morning and collected it the following evening. Free taxi service to and from the station. Seriously. a 997, unless it is a TT or has a GT in the model designation should not be in the same sentence as the M6...

P.S. My E61 came with a 2 year warranty - if you ask nicely, it is available...
 
Thanks Cheburator - that is the sort of response i wanted, these were my initial thoughts after speaking with a dealer but then other peoples comments crept into my head. thank you I am sold.

i wanted the M6 due to having a budget and bang/comfort/ usability for your £££ you can't beat them.
if that wasn't an issue id have the 997 Turbo S or a Aston DBS - but sadly, food and clothes are high on my girlfriends agenda :D.

This is an interesting read Audi R8 v Porsche 911 v BMW M6 v Aston Martin Prodrive Vantage.

The M6 is a wonderful car, but for me its just not quite there. It is a can of worms it would have to come with a 2 year warranty (which is what I said about my Z4M too((which I got and they are available if you push hard enough). Its not due to looks or pedigree, in fact I think its a good looking car. Theres just something missing and I think the Porsche has it. But if I were to buy one I would have a C4S, I was looking at one before I bought my Z4M they were just a little too old and too expensive for their age, was looking at the 996 C4S, and the Z4M was a bargain in comparison and came with a BMW 2 year warranty to keep my inner worries at bay!

Good luck with your search tho! The Z4M is a hard one to replace theres nothing quite like it.

I dont know about anyone else but its like an emotional attachment I grew up loathing over the Z4M coupe because its just like nothing else on the road. Which is why I love the Porsche, every time I slip behind the wheel or drive behind one they put a smile on my face. Its like nostalgic, and was always a pin up on my wall.

Everyone is different, if we were all the same it would be a sad world!

With regards to reliability - often it is down to luck of the draw. My Z4MC was easily the most reliable car in the World... :P I covered 47k miles in it, with hundreds and hundreds of laps of the Ring flat out and claimed for one sticky caliper... Actually, I forgot, I also claimed for worn out plastic trim surrounding the volume control on the steering wheel...

Back to E63s - if you buy wisely and with an AUC - it is a must - I think you will be fine.

MPG in the E61 - if I stay at 72mph with the cruise on while on the motorway, I get 22mpg. At 80mph this drops down to 20mpg, at the Ring I managed 80miles to a 70ltrs tank, so you do the maths. I rarely use it in Central London, but I think I get 12 to 15mpg, traffic dependent... I have covered 5000 miles since I bought it and my MPG is 19.8...

It stings compared to the super frugal vs. performance Z4MC, but man, the V10 is in another league. Headbutting the limiter at 172mph while in Belgium was something to behold. Knowing there was another 32mph of unrelenting acceleration on top should I wish to pay DMS made me giggle like a schoolgirl.... :driving:
 
Surely if the M6 is on your list, shouldn't the RS5 be a contender too, okay its not as driver orientated as a 997, but you can live with it everyday and the running costs don't make your eyes water
 
RS5...As dull as the RS4 with the same flaws...

If you're considering AUDI then TTRS or RS6 are the only avenues...Both will stick you for 40k.

Robjess, doesn't devaluation bother you? a current 40k M6 will about about 20k in about 3 years! :cry:

I'm all for an M6, but wouldn't be better to get a slightly older one and spend half the money? :?

... And then stick a supercharger with the money you save! :driving:
 
The new M6 was in autocars M special this week

Has the twin turbo V8 from the ne M5 and more interestingly a lot of carbon fibre body pannels. Looks awesome!

Braking is for pussies, it only slows you down...

On a serious note - the Ring is very gentle on brakes compared to most short circuits. It flows very well. Initially I used CARBOPAD GT and ATE Super Blue... It was only the last 50-odd laps that I installed a Brembo 4-pot conversion on all corners...

These were £60K when I bought my ///M. They've lost £20K to my £6K depreciation in that time :o
 
peddy - you are right.

I know it sounds like a waste of money and BELIEVE me I don't have it to waste.

but I never see a car as an investment, they all loose cash and generally my thought process is I buy them because I'll enjoy/ want them and therefore, I feel worth the money.
if I want a more expensive car, in the words of Jeremy Clarkson, i "work harder" lol.

an Audi R8 is a great car and I would like one but I would struggle with a V8 when the V10 is around.
you know you'd end up meeting one at the lights one day and you would be gutted. it is the same story as the Porsche, had I not had the Z4M and bought a Porsche CS then great but I couldn't go to one now, unless it is a Turbo or GT.
 
Fair point RE V8 vs V10. For me though the R8 is so beautiful that I'm happy to be a little slower and let an ugly (in comparison of course) M6 leave me... Just the same way if Cheryl Cole was a bit slow I'd still marry her... LOL

But I have to disagree with you about your enjoyment comment... How will you get more enjoyment from an M6 which is twice the price of an older one?
If there's big money to be saved (which from your comments around 20k is) and there's no difference in the cars what so ever then why not save it? :thumbsup:
