Newbie looking for mods

On pre 62 plates I would certainly get it just for roof opening while moving at 25mph. The ability to do this has made massive difference to me for topless driving.

I can program the door opening from the dash so not needed
I dont have folding mirrors so useless
Unsure why windows opening and closing when operating the roof is a big deal
We can open the roof from the key fob

So for me its closing the roof for the key fob and one touch opening. I am still chewing on this.

ANY MOD MAY INVALIDATE THE WARTY. even this.

Let me set the scene.
Your top fails.
You take it into BMW. They see the smarttop install. Do they
1) say its ok this unofficial mod that allows unofficial change in how the sequence operates could not possibly cause an overload on the motor causing the motor to fail we will pay.
2) Jump at the chance to blame the device and wriggle out of warty calaim.

Even if it was 100% fault just because the mod had been made BANG goes any claim you can make.

On my Audi TT I had a noisy air sampler fan in the dash board but because I fitted a booster gauge in the dash It voided the warty and I had to pay. Even though the gauge was no where near the fan it was because they said I had messed with the dashboard trim, I did not, but you can not argue. I should have removed the mod before taking it in.

So yes a remap MAY invalidate part of the wrty. Some remaps come with additional wrty if BMW refuse, but BMW are also aware of them. I like the idea of being able to unplug a remap.

http://www.ppcgb.com/ they are the uk distributor for the smart top £280
was only giving the info you requested for me the one touch operation plus closing with key fob are the main benefits
although i do have folding mirrors so that is handy for me

as to the warranty issue I can remove the smart top in around 10 mins so if the roof did fail it would be removed before it
went into bmw which is what i tend to do anyway if it goes in for any software updates or warranty work.
as to the locks the smart top allows you to have the doors unlock when the ignition is turned off or the fob removed

Jaz4. A mod will not invalidate the entire warranty. It may invalidate the warranty on the failed item if the modification is proven to have caused it. Modify the engine tune and if your turbo blows you pay to fix it not them. They may then find a way to extend that to all drive train components and you'd then have to fight them in court. I prefer a simpler life.

Thats the theory, but in all honesty not the practice endoursed by all dealers. Some are pretty good regarding modifications but others will go by the book, so I would take it ANY modifications will invalidate the 3 year warranty, I checked this with my own dealer. Also if you take out the Service pack it will also be invalidated. If your thinking of any mods I reckon its just best asking the dealer then sum up if the risk is worth it. These aint cheap cars to fix.

End of the day if your happy to accept your warranty maybe become void then go for it. For any remapping, choose a decent company like ACS who provide their own warranty back up. My worry with tuning the 4 pots is longevity as they're still too new and an unknown quantity.

Tim.

Can't see the benefit of risking an invalid warranty for a nice to have such as one touch operation. Surely this is a thing to do only after warranty expiry as having to keep the button pressed is not so bad. Also it is £300 and you might get eaten by the car while installing. I'll be leaving well alone.

Totally agree, If I did a remap It would be with some company that picks up the bits if BMW refuse to pay. Also as quad said on another thread a proper remap looks for the peaks that could overspin the turbo.

I have not done any mod on any of my 5 zds since the TT. Except LED angel eyes ohh dam If I had any electrical issues they could put this on the LED's.

lol yes the mod wont invalidate all the wrty just on the part you have made the mod on. As I said in the post.

Even painting the calipers could invalidate brakes.

Taking the mod out is a good idea, reason why I like the idea of a removable remap
But they are not stupid and would know of these mods, this forum.

AS Tim summed up if you do the mod expect to invalidate the warty on that item, so weigh up the risk.

Yikes, guys and gals! What tales of doom, gloom and invalidated warranties!

It seems my plans for titivating my new baby with some fancy tricks are dwindling faster than the secret bottle of whisky, stashed in the toilet of an AA meeting!

Oh well... so no remap, no smarttop module, no exhaust system... and not even a lick of paint on my calipers! This is a disaster! Please don't anyone tell me that my gorgeous new black rims have been a waste of time too.... please! :headbang:

Deenloon, do whatever mods you want.. Just be aware that there are risks with it.

Mines got all sorts done to it now.. Might even try a remap someday soon ;)

lol just spat beer out, (ahh what a waste).

Like manic I may add a proper remap, Its less than 6 months old, but like most of the mods on the site its a mod and as long as you balance the risk. If the softop was any way an issue it would be on this site as fast as quadracers car. He should be posting his drag results soon.

My TT mod was common on the TT forum and I got the brunt of a uncaring stealer.

Now some mods you do need to tell the insurer last thing you want is a 14K bill only to be told your insurance ins invalid.

I had someone pull out infont of me and I decided to go off road exploring, did 14K worth of damage to underside and side of the car as I hit a fence. It got dragged out and took to a BMW approved garage, I would not have had time to pull any mods out and if the insurance found a remap, or non standard tyres I wonder if they would have settled the bill.

My last one I hit a spade in the middle of the road causing 1.7K damage, I dont think the insurance came out like the last time.

Whether or not a mod invalidates your warranty is entirely up to the dealer you take it to. At least that's how it is in the US. I've seen people with Cobb tunes on their 335is get turned away by one dealership, while someone else with an aftermarket turbo got his work done without anyone batting an eye.
