New TopGear tonight 8pm BBC2

Taking 3 diesel 4x4s on a road trip suitable for 4x4s? Top Gear seems to have gone all sensible on us...

Watching Chris Evans squirm whilst JB took to the track was awesome, that rapper plugging his new single not so much.

I like what they've done with the 'star in a reasonably priced car' bit - the best/worst cars etc. is actually quite interesting.

A solid 7/10 from me.

No, they took 3 SUVs (Sports Utility Vehicles) so not proper off roaders onto some pretty difficult terrain and they faired pretty well. If they had taken some other types of SUVs along that they would have failed.

Someone either in this thread or another mentioned about 5th gear wrecking a Kuga, a SUV that couldn't actually go over more than a speed bump so they were showing that there are some decent, new but still pricey alternatives out there.

Thanks for clarifying, and reminding me what SUV stands for. Otherwise you'd have left me totally confused and my understanding of what I had just watched would have been left incomplete :roll:

I'm out too Mr W, after last weeks fail I didn't bother with tonight's episode.
I just didn't want to give it a second chance.
This AM I watched an old top gear episode with C, M & H although I was tiring of C before he got sacked, what it showed, it was their format and the 3 amigos just gelled.
Motormouth Evans is just a pale imitation IMO.
 
I thought it was better than last week, don't like Evans but the program itself was ok content wise.

The problem with using the term 4x4 is that there are many cars that are 4x4 or 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive and not all are raised significantly.

Two of the three cars outside mines are '4x4' but ones actually something I could go off road in the other I can't get over a speed bump without the downpipe catching never mind taking it onto a off road track.

So the terrain they went across was pretty challenging and like I said a lot of SUVs and a lot of '4x4s' as you put it would have struggled. And they had large wheels with tyres which didn't look to be designed for off road terrain which is a bit of a challenge in itself.
 
I have driven the Macan, it has the proper off road settings. Something the X5 does not have (no height adjustment etc).

Me too.

I don't know what I found more fascinating - the prices of some of those chateaux (?) or wondering what could be living in Dick Strawbridge's moustache!

I've even cancelled the "series record" on TG.

Exactly why I think they chose those 3 due to that. They could have picked quite a few different vehicles of that size but they wouldn't have lasted.

I agree that the standard raised height over other vehicles is great but if you want to use these vehicles in any proper off road surrounding they may struggle and be damaged significantly. But like Eddie Jordan's driving.

I've told you 60 million times that I exaggerate sometimes!

Ok maybe not as bad as a cookery prog but it was nevertheless a bit lack lustre - I don't think that the Le Blanc fella is a natural presenter ! I find him dull and lifeless.

Hmmmm yeah, Le Blanc is a bit take him or leave him, nothing to write home about but I did like the feature tonight.

Was a marked improvement over the usual old TG lets sabotage each others car and actually get some proper testing done.
 
Just finished watching it and I enjoyed it. Even my other half who usually hates TG and leaves the room was enjoying it.

Much better than last week but still feel they could have had more car testing but a good show.
 
As per what others have said, a much better show this week, why didn't they kick start the new era with this episode?

That 675LT is car porn, I want one.
