New MX-5

mmm, the back is hideous... looks like summit Fiat would push out.... the front looks like a cross between the Jag and a flattened S2000.... the side looks ok, and I can see some of the Zed in it.

bloody beautiful, with the turbo kits that will coming out and other choice mods its very much my type of car, I've had a mk1 and 2, bloodily LOVED my mk1.... still one of the funnest cars I've owned... ever.

Problem with FI is that the skyactiv engines are already Hi compression (15:1 or there abouts), I think you'll be lucky to get any real increase without serious issues with detonation.....Anyway the MX-5 was always meant to be a modern elan, small and light, which this new one look like they are trying to get back too.

That's the thing I've picked up recently about MX5 owners, they seem to really appreciate and enjoy their cars. The MX5 always come out on top in that aspect in any surveys.

I thought the looks were a bit "iffy" when I first saw it on Thursday morning, but I reckon this could be a very good future car to own. Rumours seem to be 1.5 and 2.0 engines, not sure if there's a turbo with them. Initially roof will be cloth, and later a hard top will join the range.

Debating with myself whether to "go back" to a soft top, but the simplicity of folding it manually by hand actually appeals to me. I reckon I might indeed go for one next summer. :driving:

Very big owners club scene for MX-5s in the Glasgow area Z4Beemer .... i think i prefer it from these static shots and i think there is a lot of Mk2 in the design - the Mk3 updated the Mk1 style but its as if MkIV has dropped the elan look and updated the MK2 and particularly the MK2.5

Still think the rear looks poor and a little sad - but i like the interior.

I like it on the whole. But there is something wrong with the proportions around the wheels and arches. Maybe it needs bigger wheels better off sets and lowering a bit. Looks a bit like a mini Jag f type to me?????

+1 on the jag comments, also has hints of z370 around the rear arches which is why it looks a bit funky at the back.
I think this release model is along the lines of the gt86 perspective, release a bogo model and allow big wheels turbos and b'kits to follow for the hardcore... Would like to see it in the flesh though as there does seem to be a lot of body panel contouring going on

The power weight ratio on the 2.0 seems like it will be a lot of fun. It will be quicker on paper than the zed up to the 2.5, based on the power/weight ratio. Don't know why some think the rear is ugly, it reminds me of the zed.

I think that looks rather good, i think some bigger wheels would finish it off nicely.
Hopefully they put bigger HP under the bonnet than previous models :)

+1 Looks are good quite S2000/Z4 ish, Light weight, 50:50 distribution, RWD, soft roof what's not to like? Could make a FWD Z2 look expensive and irrelevant

The only question will be engines as you say.

you mean the way the Mk2 made the 1.9 Z3 look, and I'm serious the Z3 in lower engine sizes used to get a hard time of reviewers in comparison.

Agree, BMW were lucky the MX5 never had a more characterful or powerful engine to rival the six in the Z4.

I was interested in the prospect of the Alfa version of the new MX5 with Alfa's own engines, but that looks shaky now.

Interesting POV and argument Tim

The 1.8 MX5 weighed in at 1065Kg with 152bhp, the Z3 1.9 weighed more with less power 1200 kg with only 138bhp and had inferior handling. Not a tricky choice for the relative costs but I'd agree the Z3 felt more up-market even if it broke down a lot more (statistically). The new MX5 looks like more of the same dynamically but promising improved quality of materials, as I say watch out FWD Z2 if it ever comes.

Here it is on the move... when you see it like this, it's perhaps more evident how its evolved. I'm loving it so far :D

A real "back to basics" kinda car, with a modern twist.

ooer I'm liking this, suspiciously like a lightened and lowered Z4 with rounded-out flame edges. Exactly what BMW should be doing with the Z range really

lol I'm very defensive of the Z3 as you need to own one long term to truly appreciate them. My 1.9 is 118bhp so even slower  When I bought the Z3 in 2008 I looked and tried a fair few MX5s and to me there was just no comparison and probably by now would be ready for breakers yard, My Z3 hasn't put a foot wrong, is completely rust free and still sweet as a nut and the build completely outshines the Mazda. I found the MX5s a little too cheap feeling with a buzzy engine. The latest one to me looks vastly improved however the interior still looks too down market.

:D quite right i'd forgotten how good Z3s are as winter hacks :poke: - you' d never want to do that in an MX-5- the advantage of the Z3 over the MX-5 came in the straight six cars . And as for Z3s being less prone to rust than MX-5s - the sills on Z3s are hardly the cars strong point. The Z4 initially went up market from the Z3 ( no engine smaller than 2.5 at first) as it was finding difficult to build a BMW that competed on price with the MX-5.

I'm sure which ever you had gone for it would still been in good nick .

The funny thing is alot of Z3 owners I know traded in for a Z4 thinking it was the better car and have since gone back or regretted it. The fact I got rid of the E89 instead of the Z3 says it all for me, it's a far more under the skin kinda car :)

Cool, it's all a matter of personal taste, heart over head etc or we would all be in a Hyundai.

The Z3 was BMW's first concious effort at marketing for women of course, the target group was apparently 'boomer women' aged 40-55 who would use it as "a weekend reward".

Sexy, old school yet modern and relevant to todays open minded car buyer. Will sell in the millions and looks to perform and present itself perfectly. Arguably the greatest all-round roadster in history and IMO this ticks every box required. Love the rag top, wheel sizes, arches, interior, front and rear lights...incredible simplicity and kudos to Mazda for enhancing a great formula.

Am very tempted.
