New MX-5

Sexy, old school yet modern and relevant to todays open minded car buyer. Will sell in the millions and looks to perform and present itself perfectly. Arguably the greatest all-round roadster in history and IMO this ticks every box required. Love the rag top, wheel sizes, arches, interior, front and rear lights...incredible simplicity and kudos to Mazda for enhancing a great formula.

Am very tempted.

Agree, been looking at more pics and it does look really good and more in the Z3 mould for me if I was ever tempted. This is what BMW should be doing and for purists if BMW was ever to release the Z2 on the MINI platform it would have to be the Mazda for me. Having owned the E89 it never imparted that special roadster feel, it just felt like any other modern retractable hardtop car.

The Z3 was BMW's first concious effort at marketing for women of course, the target group was apparently 'boomer women' aged 40-55 who would use it as "a weekend reward".

Odd though if you visit Roadster.net or org probably 95% of owners are blokes, maybe English blokes have more of an effeminate side

The funny thing is alot of Z3 owners I know traded in for a Z4 thinking it was the better car and have since gone back or regretted it. The fact I got rid of the E89 instead of the Z3 says it all for me, it's a far more under the skin kinda car :)

Maybe the quality has gone progressively down. I have never had a Z3, but trust Tim's judgement that it may be better than the E89. I actually preferred my E85 to the now gone E89. Maybe as with the MX5 the first was the best. I do however like the looks of the new model MX5.

The E89 has pretty good build to be honest but as with alot of the more recent BMWs you can see where there has been cost cutting, cheaper materials or looking at it another way lighter weight materials. The Z3 I find overall has a more solid feeling but the appeal personally is the retro charm thats lacking with the Z4.

Was impressed by the solid build feel of my Z3, along with its retro looks. It was a comfortable cruiser, just like the E89. The E85 was more entertaining to drive with its sharp sporty handling.
This new MX5 from some angles does have a hint of Jaguar F type to it. Looks good.

I've been around MX5s on and off for about 10 years now, started with a MkI Eunos and been through 2 mk3.5s, the present one is a Mk3.5 2.0 litre Sport Black which is nowhere near as nice to drive as my previous 1.8, so all being well it's getting sold today and I'll be looking seriously for a Z4.

When I first saw the new MX5 I thought it looked nice but having now seen more of it in videos and photos etc there's something aesthetically that doesn't sit easy with me, the proprtions from some angles look a bit odd and the wheels are too small. It's been received with mixed feelings on the MX5 forums but generally most people like it. There's no doubt it will sell as well as previous models, but if I ever go back to owning one I'll more than likely import a Eunos from Japan. I'll see how I get on with the Z4 first though :)

As regards the Alfa connection, the story goes that they pulled out of the partnership because they wanted to make their version in Italy, but Mazda insisted all models would be made in Hiroshima. A deal with Fiat has now been stuck I believe so there will be a model launched that has something to do with them. As far as I can tell, The cars will only share the same platform, shape and engines will be different
