Evening,

May've been asked before...got about a £500 budget and need a new laptop - it is used for occasional internet browsing, a few spreadsheets and not a lot else..seen these 3, which is the best - notwithstanding the fact they are all more than ample for my caveman requirements...

if there are any better available for about £500 then all suggestions appreciated. i know nothing about computers and am happy that way. :)

oh, and is the brand new MS office (8 or whatever) compatible with previous MS office - ie if where i work has old-school MS can the files be worked on at home, i'm not one for carting work laptops home, prefer to e mail files. and i'm not keen on touchscreens.

many thanks

No, don't buy a tablet if you're doing spreadsheet work etc. They're content consumption devices, not content creation and the lack of a keyboard will drive you insane.

The last one has the best CPU and hence best longevity and "headroom" for growth in usage model. HP is a good brand. Also look on Amazon and eBuyer

Good find on that last one - Wee Bing needs a laptop for his birthday, and that one fits the bill. Perhaps in a different colour though :D

it's cheap cos of the colour...carbon wrap it. :P

As someone in the business, I suppose I ought to say that on the two times I've spent my own money on laptops, both times I've bought Toshiba. They couldn't be touched for what you got for the money.

not sure your budget will stretch, but the soon to be released Microsoft Surface looks a potential game changer

The problem with the Surface - for me - is that it Is a tablet, with a tablet memory capacity. Isn't it ? I was looking at one for WB and it only has 64GB, no DVD read/writer etc. I think you still need a laptop if you want to do proper desktop stuff. That said, it does look lovely

I had a play with my Dad's new network at Christmas with Win8 on it. That was a strange and unsettling experience. I am sure I'd get used to it, but it was just... Weird :?

Apart from an apple Laptop I would have to go with stuart on the toshiba or if you want something that looks a but cleaner the Sony's are lovely too

Given what you say in the opening post about such minor use, I see no reason to spend more than £250 to £300. Pc world have some refurbed units at £250 for instance.

We get drawn into latest gen, faster processor, bigger HD, faster/clearer graphics which is great if you needn't, but not for what you describe.

If you want to spend £500 and feel the need to get Win8 then that's different.

I've just today dug out my 8/9 year old Sony laptop, loaded old version Word 2007 updated all the programmes, added free AVG antivirus and kept XP on it. Sending it as a totally free PC to a place in Spain for Internet browsing, and the odd Word/Excel doc.

I guess it’s all down to personal preference and budget – Or which advertising and sales blurb we believe

However the trends are to move away from static media such as DVD's and hard drives. Instead it’s all about online content and high availability, so I think local storage will be defunct over the next few years

The Windows 8 Surface is still a few weeks away but I’m definitely going to get one, if not for its portability while still able to use the same applications that I do on my laptop/desktop

You might want to read this on the Surface. Not sure it can load your desktop programmes and the OS / keyboard sounds a bit clunky. Looks nice though.

Thats because the old surface is running WIndows RT - The new surface that comes out shortly runs the full blown version of Windows

Surface Pro will be more than OPs £500 budget... Isn't cost to be around £700??

Tapatalking...

Hence my leading comment was "not sure your budget will stretch"
