new laptop

For basic users, I always buy the Lenovo units which come with 3 years warranty and are about £250 or so.

HP and Acer reliability is horrendous, so stay clear of that. Asus, Dell, Sony, Toshiba are fine.

+1 i would never dream of an acer or HP laptop myself.

At work we use Dell and Lenovo, Dell are cheaper but build quality is less then the lenovo's; sony look pretty but you pay the premium for that.

Full versions of windows 8 and you get to take advantage of touch. Nothing else better for the price on the market imo atm.

I've an ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity which is pretty damn good - but costs more than that...

I'd echo the other comments that £500 is alot for what you seem to need though.
