New, inescapable speed cameras!

Assholes.

They will never stop people from speeding. They should do something more worthwhile. They can't afford to do it anyway though, it would cost far too much!

Speeding is the least of the worries on this one. As pvr mentions, if they start rolling these out across a wide enough network of roads then it's only a simple database query and your Pay-Per-Mile billing can begin. I'm guessing the funding for this and persmission to be installed was probably a Labour thing - possibly one of their 'dying acts' where they forced through a number of policies before getting the boot. They desperately wanted both Big Brother and Pay As You Go taxing, and there it is in that system.

And to be fair, it's far more fun going fast on some twisty back road where you can be on the ragged edge of traction at every bend but still well within an average speed of 60mph.

There is actually a solution which I looked at a while back when they were talking about "pay per mile", and that is using a Luxembourgh based leasing company. You can drive in a "hire" car as long as you like (say 2 years), and it will be on foreign plates. There are companies specialising in this, offering a "to the door" service where your "leased / hired" car from Luxembourgh is delivered to your doorsteps, insured and all, and you can drive without limitations in the UK.

I was thinking about something like this, good to hear it exists. Can you take your UK cars and register them in Luxembourg to a Luxembourg company? I.e. No need to be resident? Then lease them back to yourself? I know the insurance exists as a Luxembourg company offered it to us for the Mongol Rally (global coverage). Hell if Eddie Stobart can do it with his trucks registered in Belgium....

Final point carries the day

I'd like to see them try and stick these stupid things on welsh backroads

And if/when road pricing does get introduced, what happens when fossil fuels are overtaken by ultra-efficient energy sources, does it all go away? I think not....
