New, inescapable speed cameras!

To have no numberplate - £15 fine and no points ...

is that a serious fact?

so to avoid cameras and points on licence and increased insurance its easier to just take off your number plates, put them in the boot of your car and if stopped, just apologise and say some one as just ripped them off and you found them next to your car

Interesting that they both sell cameras and a detection database. Got all ends covered if I'm reading it right - smart

Lets see. Just like my country (USA) The British Empire can't afford to pay it's debts and runs deficits every year. Yet somehow thinks it's a good idea to spend hundreds of millions if not a billion schilling to monitor speeders. And of course will need a bunch of minions to monitor and maintain the network. And thus will never end up paying for it's self.

I bet George Orwell is laughing his buttocks off right now and saying, I told you so.

We have no one to blame but ourselves. To many folk wanted the government to take care of them from cradle to grave. And by god they're going to do it.
Pandora's box is hard to close.

Cheers
Jerry

It's nonsense. Think about an average journey where you are going with traffic and through multiple speed limit changes. I can't see it being financially worthwhile for them because not many people are going to be able to keep up a significantly high average speed. The only places I can find to keep up high average speeds these days are on dual carriageways and motorways which are probably some of our safest roads anyway!

While I disagree with the concept of cameras as money earners, it will work in certain environments. My village being an example that is almost entirely 30 mph, however there are several sections of road in and out that people are mostly in the 50-60 band using it as a commute rat run, slowing just as they pass the core. Single speed cameras can't work, speed bumps are not permitted, etc.

in 10-20 years time I have no doubt all cars will be speed restricted by GPS controlled devices that will limit speed to the areas limit. Already common in Japan

The Japanese system is not quite to the limit though, but I know what you mean.

The difference is that Japan is a single country, whilst the UK is part of Europe (yes - it is :) ). We can not govern say French cars in the UK, so this would require a European wide directive which would be difficult to achieve. Can you imagine telling Poland to implement it, don't think they will somehow.

There is actually a solution which I looked at a while back when they were talking about "pay per mile", and that is using a Luxembourgh based leasing company. You can drive in a "hire" car as long as you like (say 2 years), and it will be on foreign plates. There are companies specialising in this, offering a "to the door" service where your "leased / hired" car from Luxembourgh is delivered to your doorsteps, insured and all, and you can drive without limitations in the UK.

Not sure I understand the 'drive without limitations in the UK' Surely any speed fines, offences, etc go back to the lease company and are charged on to the driver. I see plenty of foreign car pulled by the police for a little check over too. I guess it's harder to get points back to a licence, but thought the EU were sorting that one out.

At the moment, there are no arrangements with the other European countries. I know ... ;)

I was more replying to your point of speed limiting devices and pay-per-mile schemes that can be avoided using foreign plated cars, and for the time being, no risk of getting fines from fixed positions equipment as the fine will not be sent abroad.

Even if they are sent abroad, it would only be a "financial" fine to the lease holder in the UK as the lease company can not idenfity the driver (i.e. no points).

OK - making sense

Thats why its still mildly entertaining to drive past french autoroute speed cameras at 131kph :) or even those ones that flash up your reg and 'trop vite!' for the benefit of the rest of the road users LOL.

I never cease to be amazed, for a country that has the same number of vehicles but four times the UKs accident rate, not to mention the way they happily tailgate you at 130kph when you are legitimately overtaking, at just how anal french drivers can be. :headbang:

But this all about business finding answers to problems that don't exist so that they can relieve the government of some more tax dollars. And don't start me on the computer virus 'industry'....... :fuelfire:

In my last car I got my front bumper respray and didnt have the front plate on for 3 or 4 months. But kept it in the passenger seat just incase!

£60 fine and no points if you ever get caught is still better then a speeding ticket.
