New forum member due to purchase of Z4 3.0 '04

I hope you get the starter issue sorted OK.

Just noticed in your sig. that you have an 07 silver 123d - I had one of those for over 6 years.

I liked it, but then I got a Z4! :)

Hi is Bristol too far for roof motor relocate. Allan in Bristol NUMBER 5. did mine in record time Got my motor running and into boot. Invisible behind custom cover in BMW carpet. PM me if you want his number

Mr Tidy, 123d is simply amazing value for money second hand. Where else can you get so much performance, so little fuel consumption, with so much comfort and style? Agree though that the Z4 is sportier. Best to have both :driving:

Fitted a 'Joying' Android based head unit the other day, with DAB windscreen aerial, GPS antenna, separate mic for Bluetooth phone stuff. DAB channels added but not all in my home location though. The analogue aerial is connected via a FAKRA connector adapter and works well with that side of things.

So, we now have built in Satnav, DAB radio, internets (when tethered to mobile phone) but I can stick a dongle on it with SIM to have it independently interneted up. Also I can add a reversing camera (if I can find a OE looking version/or discrete one) and finally a dash cam all integrated.

Update:
Car passed it's MOT with a couple of minor advisories. :D

I've checked the aerial amplifier and it seems to be dead. There seems to be several different units in the rear near the aerial. I've decided to get a new aerial with built in amplifier and a reversing camera at the same time. If I have to run a cable to the front of the car I may as well do two!

My wife drives this car mainly but she is getting fed up with the roads around here that are quite bumpy and pot holed. The 18's and 35 section tyres can't be helping here. Would there be an advantage in trying 17 inch wheels with fatter more compliant tyres? Or do I have to soften the suspension some how? WE don't track the car so there seems little point in compromising the on road ride quality.

Good news on the MOT.

If your wife is finding the ride too stiff it's possibly a shame you managed to find a car with the M-Sport suspension!

If the car could use a suspension refresh it might be worth going back to non M-Sport springs and dampers, although I've read of people finding non-OEM components being more compliant.

Swapping to 17" wheels should definitely help as I think they use 225/45 tyres so there would be more sidewall, especially with non run-flat tyres - but you might want to keep the convenience of run-flats if the car is mostly driven by Mrs Floydroid.

Thanks for the info

I wouldn't know what suspension is fitted to the car unless you are saying that all 3.0ltr cars have M Sport kit as standard? It handles really well, however it's pretty pointless of I don't take the car on track IMO.

Any recommendations for non OEM kit? Whatever Eurocarparts offer or are we talking Bilstein and Eibach etc?

Just changed the Msport springs to Eibachs on mine and as the current wife and a mate will quatify, is a better ride and not as jiggy :driving:

nice car & welcome - you'll get much more enjoyment out of it knowing it was significantly less than a 10k boxster aswell

I've replaced the aerial amplifier module (Real-OEM part no.: 65206913896). The reception has improved significantly. Cost £15 for secondhand unit. I'm still contemplating changing the springs on the suspension but I'll try the wheels first.

What Tyres (brand etc) are on the Z4?

If they are still run flats - different brands have different characteristics - the OEM Bridgestone were/are shocking. I switched to Michelin when I had mine and it was a much better car.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on finding an unmolested, clean and tidy Zed. Im sure it will provide many years of happy, sunny, motoring.

Oh and thanks for the weather alterations! :poke:

An update!

Last MOT and service included new front bottom arms as the bushes were worn and a couple of rear tyres. I've not had time to do anything with springs or tyres to improve the ride yet. I'm going to refurb the wheels at some point and as this winter has taken it's toll, so that's when I'll be changing tyres over anyway and I may try smaller width/higher profile tyres at the same time as softer springs.

In other news, I hit a muntjac deer. I was only doing 20 or so mph and I also stood on the brakes before I hit the thing. It ran off but was dazed and my bumper has popped out at the near side, with some minor crazing of the paint. So annoying as the bumper was pristine! The bumper is off at the moment to fix the black clip support on the wing and it also gives me a chance to pop the headlights out and polish them up anyway.

I've noticed the headlamp washer is leaking so I'll try and fix that too.

I've had to clean my hood drain holes a few times now but it's not too much trouble. I didn't get it relocated in the end.

I've changed the aerial to improve the DAB reception and normal radio, which it has but it's not perfect, perhaps it's not ideally positioned?

Good to hear you are still enjoying your car OP.

Although it's a shame your are having some issues with it - hopefully it won't prove too difficult to get it sorted.

This weekends job was to fix the muntjac damage, as well as a leaking headlamp washer and a condensate'd headlamp. All jobs that require the bumper to be removed anyway. The headlamp was removed and 'drained' of water and dried out indoors - you can see the design flaw here as the large amounts of water in the recent deluge, has made it's way past the wheel arch liner 'headlamp lamp change access cover' and onto the back of the headlamp, where it pools in a recess, eventually seeping into the lamp as the seals get old and brittle.

I've dried this out, and polished the projector lens at the same time as they go misty with dust. I stuck some bike grease on the headlamp access cover seal and made a temporary seal (duct tape) over the wheel arch access cover to stop that happening in future wet weather.

The headlamp washer leak (it was draining the reservoir over night) looks like it's the 'o' ring on the quick release hose fitting to the jet assembly, so I've found a replacement 'o' ring and resealed it. If it leaks again then I'll just blank it as the washer does little washing anyway. The bumper just pops back in to the wing clips, which I've repaired.

Reasonably satisfying
