My Z4M CSL - Stage 3 Mods

I have two questions:

Has anyone had experience of light weight Flywheels on here? Have read the blur and says that it improves acceleration.

Also about lightning the Z4M roadster. Many parts I have put on my Z4M have reduced the kerb weight but are there any others (E.G. replacement chairs etc...)?

Lightweight flywheels can improve acceleration a little bit, but also mean you get reduced engine braking benefit when you need to slow down.

There are plenty of weight-saving mods for the Z4M - and I believe 100kg is easily achievable if you don't mind spending thousands on carbon panels & titanium exhaust bits - and I'm surprised CA haven't already directed you down that route :P

The standard seats are not particularly heavy compared to M3 or M5 electric Recaros, but with their motors they're still heavier & less supportive than Recaro Polo Positions. Then there's always the option of removing some sound-proofing, trim, carpets, etc.

Ultimately it depends on how much you want a stripped out road-racer over a fast road car.

BTW, this is what I had planned for an e34 M5 (1700kg down to 1400kg) - which some of the other board members actually went through with - and it easily keeps up with my Z4MC (same power, but more torque), and is faster in the wet due to it's more pliable suspension. I even contributed my hoard of spare wheels & track tyres (ex Porsche Cup tyres from when they went to 18" from 17") to their efforts. However, it did take some persuading to make them fit their harnesses correctly (i.e. as per the MSA Blue Book & Schroth instructions).

Have already reduced the weight some with of my mods. To CA-AUTO defence they have suggested a number of things but just thought I’d post the question as there might be a cheaper alternative than going the carbon route. TC-Kline in the US do a full carbon version for both the coupe and roadster, great weight reduction but very costly. Would be good to see what difference of 100kg lighter before and after times. :?

Oh yes the Nitrons do the following kits:

1. NTR SPORT ... for fast road and occasional track day use, uses oem style rubber top mounts for best street compliance; 1 way 24 position damper adjustment.

2. NTR SPORT PLUS ... as above but with solid camber adjustable top mounts for the more hard - core street and occasional track use.

3. NTR TRACK ... for more regular track day user who still uses his car on the road; 2 way 24 position damping adjustment.

4. NTR RACE ... for dedicated race use; 3 way 24 position damper adjustment.

The ones I hand installed on the car are 2. NTR SPORT PLUS.

Well, other than trim, carpets & seats, there's not a lot left in the Z4 to remove :P

Just to put things into perspective, this is what i've done so far.

1) Recaro P/P Seats 40-50kg
2) Forgestar wheels 15kg
3) Exhaust, 100 cell cats and midsection 10kg
4) Braile L/weight Battery, Intrax, Air box etc 10-15kg

Next for me is insulation but not really keen on this as the car is already loud enough as it is

Am not an expert on harness setups, but when i was looking at options on how to set mine up I was advised against this type of inverse V shaped fitment. Main reason being that in an impact as your body moves forward you could get significant downward pressure on your shoulders toward your lower back...

BTW great work loosing 300kg on an M5

That's what both the MSA Blue Book and Schroth said, and was passed on to them.

It took us a bit of effort, but they're now secured parallel to the floor near the rear bulkhead (attached to a huge upper shock mount brace) - but they still refuse to put a roll-cage in it, despite already having had the car at what felt like 60º from horizontal (with me in) already :headbang:

flatout can you explain the parts needed for the seat swap? how do you get around the airbag / other warning lights?

More to this thread than meets the eye. I have owned an E46 M3 CSL for the last 4 years, and recently purchased a black Z4M Coupe, which has been stripped and modded for track use.
I have been reading this forum for a while now, and i thought i would join to point something out. I have realised that z4m owners are waaaay behind when it comes to knowing about the s54 engine.

With the mods to this z4m vert, it is impossible to achieve 390bhp, let alone 380bhp. A CSL has 360bhp. Over on CSL Register, myself as well as other CSL owners have had these extra mods, the most you can get out of the CSL engine is 375bhp. You have to remember the CSL engine is based on the normal s54 engine on normal M3s, as well as the z4m. They produce around 330bhp at most. So the engine is already stretching at 360bhp, with the CSL.

So, i did a little research to the company the OP used, and it looks like they are con artists. I would strongly suggest to the OP to go to a more reputable tuner for a check over and for gods sake change your oil!

Here are some links i found:

It seems AL tuning, which did all the work on this car, use the wrong oil in cars, diagnose cars wrongly, and take on warranty work, but pretend to change parts that cost in excess of over £4000. They actually sprayed the vanos, and made it out that they changed it for a new one.

I also found this thread over on the M5 forums, which seems to be when this guy first started to try and con people, by claiming bogus 55bhp remaps on the M5s http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/off-topic-forum/102983-550bhp-chip-tune-uk.html

A further research revealed, that they actually also lie about what performance their tuned cars can do.
http://www.a-ltuning.com/Democars.html

A supercharged m3, full weight, probably doing 500bhp, can do less than 10 seconds 1/4 miles times? You would need a car with around 1000kgs, and 1000bhp to achieve such results. Even the E92 times are laughable, with an 11 second quarter mile time and the e92 weighs more.

I strongly suggest people do their homework, before parting out with your hard earn money. I have personally dealt with other companies such as thorney and bexley, and lost out on money, due to cowboy work, and bad customer services.

The only companies i use for work on my Z4M, is Simpsons motorsports and Evolve. Best value for money, and they are the best at what they do.

Also I’ve notices the Torque have improved much more than the BHP. Before the figures was 380bhp @ 8074revs and 267 torque @ 2841 (but stay around that all the way up the rev range). Now it reads 391bhp @ 7700 ish and 304 torque @ 3700 ish.

I just realised this statement. Just proves they are playing you for a fool lol. +37 torque after a simple mod LOL? They are telling you, that you have more torque than an e92 v8 4 litre engine. Come on dude, wake up, you have been had.

Kings, the only thing he did there was have dyno run everything else was done at CA-Automotive?

This is thie only post he mentions them...

Nice looking Z4m and nice video. Looks like a fun track. I'm hoping to be doing another article but this time in BMW Car magazine on the handling. Hoping for some professional photos and video runs on my car. So will keep you posted on that. Let me know of up and coming meets :D

The only YouTube video was done at the AL-tuning garage with Stage 1 mods. It says schrick cams and enlarge throttle bodies etc but its wrong. Those were added in my stage 2 mods.

When driving at 4000revs upwards the combination of the carbon Airbox, cams and other bits makes a real hard induction noise. It’s very addictive

Wow massive post here!!! Simpson are the only tuner that touch my z4m also, they are the best!!
I agree these engines rarely make 338bhp they are quoted.

Oh crap... haven't read these about A-L Tuning yet, not sure I want to now... although they didn't do much with mine, other than mess up the bumper.

Does sound like Simpsons in the place to go

peddy, A-L Tuning are the sister company, they tend to do the mapping for CA, IIRC.

Kings, we're picture and details whores around here... well I am... can we have a post in the Newbies section please  I enjoy reading about the things I can't afford to do myself :(

I believe all the work was done by and at AL tuning garage, but money was paid to CA for the job. AL Tuning do not have a dyno. They use an outside company, hence why on the dyno sheet, the customer was al tuning.

I think I best let people know that this conversation has been going on another Form called M3 Cutters and now has over spilled onto this forum. Here’s the link to that thread but is sounds very familiar.

This is a copy of my last post on M3 Cutters.

“Its looks this conversation has now continued on the Z4-Forum. The conversation over there sound very familiar and the timing of this thread ending here and then the same comments starting over there by someone who has just joined that site tonight (Tue Jan 04, 2011 8:47 pm). Comments about the wrong oil and re-spraying parts it all sounds very familiar, LOL. I’ll let you draw your own conclusions on the matter :D

To be honest I won’t be posting any more comments on this forum as I feel it’s just not worth the effort. Everyone is entitled to the opinions and comments but I do not want to be used a vehicle for people to have a go at AL-Tuning and CA-AUTO. Again thank you all for the positive comments.

Best regards, B”

To the people on Z4 Forum I thank you for all your nice comments but I won’t be posting any more comment on here as I feel it’s just now going to be used a vehicle for certain people to have a go at AL-Tuning and CA_AUTO again. It’s just such a coincidence. As I have said before everyone is entitled to their opinions but it’s just not worth my time now to get drawn into the same stuff again.

Best regards to the people of Z4 Forum.
