My Number Plate has been cloned

Saturday Morning I received a letter from the Central Motorway Police Group ( http://www.west-midlands.police.uk/keeping-you-safe/behind-the-badge/motorways/ ) informing me that my vehicle XXX XXX has been witnessed being driven on the hard shoulder of the M6 Northbound junction 4A to 7 on the 06/11/14 at 01:54. This was only a warning letter and I presume this is why no photograph was enclosed, nor any details of the car except the registration.

Now I know this wasn't me for a number of reasons, one I was tucked up in bed with Mrs H, and also my car has been on SORN since the end of October. Another factor is this is 200 miles away from where I live (I would like to think that there would be some ANPR records available if I did make this journey).

So on a Saturday not a lot you can do, so I ran local plod to report that my car may have been cloned. I then emailed the CMPG informing them it was not me, my car is on SORN and attaching some photos of my car highlighting the differences to a standard model. I also fired off an email to the DVLA as advised by local plod enclosing the letter from the CMPG and photos etc, and backed it up with a letter in the post.

Anyway 08:30 this morning I receive a call from the CPMG advising that they have a photo and the registration is X XX XXX, identical to mine except for the spacing. Luckily though they were pleased to report that it was not me, and was in fact a foreign registered Renault truck. They advised that they have not seen the truck since, but will keep on record in case they commit another offence.

So as it turns out I haven't been cloned :) but this has prompted me to remove my number plate from all photos (I will tidy them up, it was a rush job on Saturday). I know that personalised plates are supposedly less likely to be cloned, but once bitten and all that.

What you going to do about them having rumbled your smuggling operation though ?

And nice to know you was tucked up with Mr Srhutch :D

I'm sure a burly Renault driving trucker would have been more welcomed though 8)

Glad you got it sorted mate, good argument not to show plates now

Really very glad to hear it wasn't anything more sinister!

There, fixed now! ;)

Think you will find it was cached as it's fine for me. Hit F5 and it will update. Nothing I can do about that :idunno:

Aha! That does explain it, it works now! I've always thought you paid a high level of attention to detail which is why I was surprised!

I was thinking about putting up a renault truck with ms-paint'ed on CSLs and your numberplate as your sig but that might be taking a joke a bit too far!

Do it!

wow.. lucky it wasnt the same car as no doubt they would be hard pressed to notice the different wheels, or skirts....

My friend had his ford focus cloned... except the copied car was a different colour (black compared to silver) was a lot of hassle for a few weeks.. as the cloned car stole petrol and got speeding tickets.

I think I could quite easily prove it wasn't me even if the are had come back looking the same. The font on my number plate for one is not the current spec so unless they had the plates made up a few years ago they would be different.

A guy I worked with years ago had a 205 1.9 GTI and there were reports of another the same going around with the same plate.
The other car was speeding around jumping lights etc and this guy was getting the blame evn though he protested his innocence.
The police took possession of his to rule it out and that there was in fact another car with the same plates.

I was laughed at when I previously mentioned this possibility - it's nice to be proved right [for a change]

I've done it on and off in the past, but from now on will always remove.
