My bespoke seats

They're fantastic. I've been thinking of doing the very same with my own seats. Are yours heated? I wonder if this would affect the heating in any way...

Looking great! Love the design.

I do have one question, for the door cards, it looks like the material covers the whole panel without a seam, unlike the original Z4 door cards. The seam is designed to split when the side air bag goes off. What will happen if your side airbag needs to deploy?

Andrew.

I did ask about this Andrew and was told the central panel actually pops off as the bag deploys with considerable force but great point you have raised

Andrew is correct the central seam is meant to give way, there is no panel that pops off.

I think you will have an issue there if ever the airbags went off.

Have to say though they don't look bad

You've got to be happy with that! Have you thought about getting the whole door leathered?

As per this beautiful creature:

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=281103

It didn't occur to me to get the whole door card leathered but will probably get it done in summer along with the sun visors.

If you get it done would you update the thread with the cost? Ive been looking to have it done for ages.

I've sent him an email and asked him to send me a quote for a complete leathering of the door card in three different qualities of leather. I also asked him to send 3 swatches representing basic, medium and high grade leather with prices. I will upload on receipt for anyone that may be interested. To reduce cost further you could get him to match the original central panel as I recall him saying it wasn't an expensive leather.

Looks great Mo, really like that

Thanks Bing ..Original outer parts, replaced all central panels with new Nappa leather of a high grade so I suppose if he did re use original it might be less

Maniac, my seats are heated and it was a concern but Paul actually offers a heated seat upgrade for cars without it and therefore aware of related issues re the padding and I am assured it wont affect the heating at all. I think this quilted effect would look even better in an E89 mate

Thank you for all the positive comments very kind people :)

I did ask for perforated leather but because of the quilted effect I was advised against it as it makes the job harder due to stitching getting caught up in the perforation. I think plain perforated would be a sporty look that would look amazing with the interior, just thought I'd through that in as food for thought for anyone pondering the matter.

With matching perforated gear lever and handbrake gaiters, plus a recovered steering wheel with perforated panels from Royal Steering Wheels, I reckon it'd look ace

You could even have the knee pads recovered as well...

LOL , I have had the knee pads done and the cowel at the back of the handbrake gaiter. I had to stop myself at that... less is more and all that business.

I found this out when my side air bag went off, there's a panel behind the leather which has a flap, when the airbag goes off the airbag pushes through the flap and breaks through the leather seam. This may be a problem for you, but only if you crash!

Sorry if this is not what you wanted to hear, but safety first is always important. Might be worth reminding the fitter about this for future project as I'm sure he'll get many more looking at the fantastic job he's done for you.

Andrew.

Seriously impressive upgrade there Mo , we all know some mods are purely personal choice but this really takes your M up a notch from standard fayre 8)
brave move that has more than paid off

Yes you are right I am going to drop the interior off to the garage where my mods are getting done and clarify with him, It isn't a problem to have a seam put in and you have made a very valid point which i'm sure most readers will have picked up on. I was under the impression that on deployment of the airbag it would naturally find it's way out and and as the door card central section now has no seam it would break off the poppers on the central panel. I am not knocking the importance of side airbags at all but my other car doesn't have them, I still drive it everyday, leave it to my love handles to save my ribs :)
Well warranted point Andrew

Ah, the old anatomical airbag ploy, eh?

I seem to remember something about Katie Price (Jordan) mentioning that she always had her airbags at the ready when she appeared on Top Gear (several seasons ago). :?
