Manual M40i Live on BMW Configurator

cognac in the flesh is a bit of an odd colour.
I actually think cognac in the flesh looks a million times better than in pictures. I nearly didn't buy my 440 because it had cognac, but it was the best around so I did. Liked the interior instantly I saw it TBH.
It's that matt vile green that's the issue for me, never mind the interior!

I wouldn't swap my cognac interior for anything in the current range, I only ever get compliments. However, the matt green is not my cup of tea at all, the manual is just so appealing.

Love the green with the cognac seats but would prefer it not to be frozen. Keep it shiny and would look a lot better

I think with a full cognac interior would work well with the metallic Sanremo Green but the frozen just doesn't suit the car imo.
Anyway, there may be hope if the configurator is wrong about the colours as it appears to be a bit wonky about the pricing.

The BMW press release says the handschalter is from £60,675 but when you select the manual on the configurator it comes out as £63,145. So a £5850 option then? Well maybe, who knows and for a car in colours chosen by kinder.....hmmm. Then, if you remove the option it says it's -£5325....hopefully it's all a mistake unless of course they just can't be bothered to make RHD cars in colours we want. I can't believe there's any market research that suggests this will be a killer colour combo in the UK.

My cost to change would be close to £30k and there's no way on god's earth I'm blowing that amount of cash on a car painted in post soviet camo green. Although I'd love a manual I'd rather keep what I have and spend £10k ish with those nice people at Rossiters if I can't spec a new one as I want.

Next thing you'll hear is that they've dropped it for the UK as nobody bought it. Either that or they'll add the other colours/trims just after most people had given up and bought a 718 GTS or something, and after that they'll then drop it because nobody bought it.

I'm quite cross tbh.

I'm not a fan of the frozen colours, although I do like the Cognac interior. It would look fantastic with Thundernight paint!

We put out a car in San Remo green the other day, not a zed mind you. It looked absolutely fantastic and this was on a dull day with heavy rain.

Ye it’s all subjective, I’ve got imola on imola so can’t really talk to taste lol thankfully most of the interior is black so the seats add that bit of light in the cabin which I like. My original M coupe was black on black and hated it felt so claustrophobic. In that image the seats look on the more orange side to me. Whereas the evo ones look different again. Hard to tell what they really are.

Ordered - only joking. At £63,145 OTR before you add any packs, except for Shadowline which is included in the handschalter pack, I just don't think it is worth it. Add the fact that the only available colour combination at the moment is dubious to say the least. Its personal preference of course but I feel the B58 engine is better mated with an auto box :exitright:

You've been asked a zillion times. But did you regret getting rid of the 718?

I agree about the auto/B58 combo, it is lovely.

On balance no. The 718 with the N/A flat six is some package, however, I'd had it from new and it was coming up to 3 years old so it was extended warranty time coupled with a major service at 4 years old. Added to that some bad OPC experiences and I felt it was time to return to BMW. I had admired Thundernight on the 2 series and when they introduced it on the LCI G29 that sealed it for me and I have no regrets.

I sold my base 718 for many of the same reasons, although there were two other main reasons also.

I had a £1,400 warranty bill about 18 months in and had I kept the car I too was looking at taking out a warranty and facing the 4 year service bill.

There are times I regret selling, was by far the best handling car I've ever owned.

The Boxster platform is epic but also flawed with the same logic as the BMWs.

My dad has a 981 Boxster GTS and in terms of appointment, liveability its a great car. If you want something that makes you feel like a driving god there's not much better.

Things I really dislike about it, the car doesn't feel as fast as my M. Mainly they are almost identical but the GTS doesn't make as much torque low down like the M and it doesn't have that get up and go. The positives for me are negatives it just doesn't move and I enjoy pushing the car around a bit and the M is so tail happy that the Boxster felt a bit boring to me didn't make my heart flutter.

He also has a 991 S with the same engine in the 718 GTS and I think the 911 even tho its a 991 is far more exciting to drive because like the M it steps out and is less predictable. The 991 engine has that more power and that does feel quick although it's a bit heavier but I enjoy driving the 991 so much more than the 981. Sport plus it feels like such an animal. Both are PDK.

With the 718 GTS im sure that the engine makes up for the pep, although again I think these are high geared too? Im sure it still has the same qualities in terms of being very predictable.

I know its a bit silly that to me a car thats quick and glued to the road is a negative but I got my first M at 23 and ive just learned rightly or wrongly thats what I like and when I drive these other cars they just dont have the same axe murderer like quality.

Although the Z4 is a lot more grown up than the Z4M it still has the same BMW qualities as my 18 year old M.

Kind of why ive kept in the Ms because I dont think the m40 is worth £65k and its quirks and that on the edge feeling just doesn't exist in modern cars unless you go for a GT models.

Yes, adaptive cruise is only possible on auto cars.
Why's that then, Ted?
Adaptive uses radar, that I do know. Why does a gearbox affect that?
Waste of technology IME. THE most annoying thing on any car I've owned with it.

Who’s Ted…?

Something to do with dipping the clutch for a length of time if I remember correctly…could be wrong of course. :driving:

On my X5M, adaptive was not available but was on the non M cars. Perhaps the new manual has the same "exclusive" issues with that

No I’m wrong, seems you CAN have adaptive on a manual, not many manufacturers offer it however.

Probably tech has improved from when I was looking at adaptive a few years ago, eg, the new Ranger has adaptive that can keep to varying speed limits without you adjusting it if you want.

How did it look in reality compared with the configerator image?

The only other green I have seen I think is called Isle of Man green and that was on an M4 which looked great.

Far better in reality [ref]Nanu[/ref], Isle of man green is cracking, we had an M8 in it.
Hopefully when STMBO is in the right frame of mind, there will be a green M40 available with cognac interior waiting for me.

Just harking back to one of my favourite cars which was a Mazda 323 Limited edition. One of the last 500 made with a V6 Zedos engine. That was Emerald Green with a dark cream interior and after 3 years of ownership, I sold it for more than I paid for it.
