Tom.

1. Help! E89 interior issues
2. Why is my E89 not very fast?

(Who is Tom?)

:google:

The key phrase was 'done to death' - which personally I don't find offensive, but everyone's different. Most people would respond with  and go for a nose. Compared to other forums I peek in on this place is a paragon of politeness and respect, for the most part. Some people stir it up, some dislike each other, and some need to have a higher opinion of their abilities and eloquence - Tom

I hope he's not gone for good - whether you agree with Gary's manner of delivery or not, he is one of the most knowledgeable people on the forum when it comes to the e89, and always offered his advice freely.

some people are a bit highly strung about the search function, there are certain people who will want the internet like their sock drawer, all tidy and ordered, and others who are quite happy with multiple crusty socks.. :tumbleweed: ... littering the forum, all being for the same purpose.

live and let live I say, it came across a little unfriendly to me, but not offensive, not everyone's laid back in life, but the responses were a little hypocritical.

if any member leaves because they are unhappy with the forum then its sad, we should all look in the mirror and see if we like what we see

personally I would not want to offend anybody, if I did I would certainly stand up and apologies

I haven't seen your TT can you post a picture as I can't be arsed to search

What's the search function?

I read that thread that day.

My observations were:

1) That Maniac's response was a bit rude for someone who I think was a first-time poster (or at least in single digit posts).
2) That someone pointed out it was a bit offish and a few others agreed.
3) That someone else then decided it was the right time to let Maniac know the list all of the things about Maniac that annoyed them.
4) He took his ball home and hasn't returned since, which is a shame. I think he did that once before but remerged later.

All of the above were completely avoidable, especially if everyone followed Tom's advice on one of the preceding pages of this thread.

For what it's worth, I've got nearly 5k posts and I virtually never use the search function because I reckon it's shite. If it has recently improved as wondermike suggests, I'll have to give it another go.

I think Tom summed up my views quite well. I have spent many years on all manor of forums and seen various different dynamics. I have also seen this forum evolve over the years in many ways, both good and not so good. One thing that I have always been very happy with is the fact that this community seems to be a lot more friendly than many others, has been largely self governing (with help from mods) and has quite a lot of members who have sold their Z4's and still decided to stay on the forum, a testament to the community, I think.

I can totally relate to the frustration of seeing the same topic over and over again, but as has been stated before this happens on all forums. What I like to see in those cases is the newbie politely asked to use the search facilities, but perhaps drop in a few example threads or example searches. I have been searching for things before and come across a newbie post asking for what I was looking for and the first response was someone listing 3 or 4 good threads. This meant I also found what I want rather than finding a grumpy thready where the guy was told off.

Sure we want to try and educate people to use the search but this is a forum not a wiki, we will have repeat threads from time to time, more so as the life of the Z4 gets older.

I'm not having a pop at anyone here though, I think largely we are a friendly bunch, but I just wanted to echo what Tom said, especially about first impressions people get when they ask a question. Some of us have spent so much time on forums it is second nature, but some people haven't and they may genuinely get confused by the search facility.

Keep it friendly guys, and I too hope grumpy Mr Maniac comes back :D
