There's reports of an air traffic guy in kiev who was tweeting whilst the tower was being taken over by govmt military forces after apparently the jet was being escorted by ukrainian jets before it was downed.
Obviously - like most of this, could all be fake. In my experience if a passenger jet is being escorted, the airline and local air-traffic would be aware.

One thing you can be sure of - unfortunately we will never know what REALLY happened. Too much political capital at stake for that to happen.

I hope that everyone keeps a cool head about this. Can't see any gain for shooting down an airliner for either Russia or Ukraine. On the face of it, it looks like 'Collateral Damage'. There'll be several elements to this, not least as Angie pointed out, why was the 'plane in that location in the first place. Not that it's any justification for it being shot down of course, no doubt it was entitled to be where it was.
In any conflict scenario, combatants get hot headed and are on tenter hooks. Sadly, it's almost inevitable that these things happen. The only thing that can be hoped for is that the passengers and crew knew nothing about it.

Indeed, there is no excuse for this plane to have been shot down. Possibly all aviation authorities need to get together and agree on where they can or cannot fly in times of conflict.
I've just watch the interview with Liam Sweeney's father and it's absolutely heart wrenching to watch and hear. I also can't believe that nobody told the him and his family that his Son was on that flight and instead he found out by reading the statement published by Newcastle United. It's shocking
