i'm also trying to do CCV/oil separater thingy too... apparently it's a source for a high oil consumption

I just read through a bunch of CCV stuff and have determined that as of this time, I don't need to do this...

I don't use any oil (I check it weekly) and I have no oil leaks in that area... But of course all that could change. Now I know what to look for...

i burn about a quart every 3000...and it shouldn't

is the banjo rings the crush washers?

im going to do EVERYTHING in one day... gonna be a long one lets see....
-trans oil
-diff oil
-coolant
-thermostat
-waterpump
-Cabin filter
-VANOS seal
-CCV(maybe... maybe not)

Get someone who's done it before to lead the procedure!

Totally necessary things that aren't specified above:

- Mirror tool. You'll never find some of the nuts without one.
- Have a hacksaw handy. Seriously.
- You'll need a torque wrench capable of measuring just 7 lbs/ft to reinstall the valve cover properly. I used shipkiller's very old manual gauge one.
- Have lots of rags handy for all the oil that will come spilling out as you pull the vanos off.

Other than that, a printout of the detailed DIY from Besian is good to have on hand.

The cabin filter is the worst!!!!! I would rather pull the entire engine than have to change a cabin filter agai :pinch:

dude it's like three screws for the panel and sliding of the filter housing... i done it by accident(curious as to waht that big box was) but it's absolutely not hard... it's very easy like 2 out of 10.

Can it damage the engine? I've notice a few rpm drops while I was driving yesterday. I have the warranty and I was wondering if it would be covered?

Yes it is easy to get the screws out but you have to be all twisted under the dash to see what you are doing. and the 2 plastic covers are a PITA to get pop off. I agree not very technical but still a PITA!

BMW does not acknowledge this defect at all. Even if you were to somehow convince them to warranty replace your entire vanos unit, as that is all they would do, you'd received a new one with the same failing buna rings. In another 20 - 30k miles the symptoms would return and once again, it would be replace vanos or do this fix.

i bought one too! my buddy is going to come over and we are going mine and his. Thanks Ship and Reach for all the help.

Finished! all in all it took me 6 hours ( good thing i didn't challenge ship i would have lost) But in my defense i did have to re-engineer a tool to get those pesky caps out. I am going to wait until the morning to have one more look over before i start it up (just to make sure i didn't forget to put something back!).

I will say i don't think my VANOS was that bad the intake piston was kinda hard to push it didn't jiggle around like the beisan said it would. But the exhaust one did when i took the spring out it moved a bit so maybe it was worth it we'll see. I was please to see that my engine was extremely clean under the valve cover.

Last rant, why didn't BMW make our cars 1 inch longer!!!!! My hands are cut to pieces because of that radiator support!

the bolt that is actually holding the vano unit in the cam shafts....the direction said it's like "left hand tread" ...does that mean it's right to loose, left to tighten?

correct! because the way the cam's spin the force tightens it. kind of like pedals on a bike, they won't come loose because as you pedal they are actually tightening.

put a tank through it ( a little over 300 miles) runs like a top!
