Machine monkeys zed

Car mods on hold. My dog is in the vets going under the tooth brush. He has got to have at least 2 teeth taken out. So that wont be cheap.

Poor little fella, Poor car, Poor me

Been slaving away trying to come up with a way to fit the oil cooler without costing me too much. Come up with this as a trial idea. I need to check how it all works and make 100% sure i wont oil starve and kill my engine. Thank you so much Guidok for all your advice. Its not finished as i only have the return connected at the moment. I have a plan using the BMW filter internals for the outlet.
Photbucket wont let me upload pictures at the minute i will upload them later.

OK, I take everything back about giving your calipers a proper paintjob.....

Make washing your car a priority.....

So i spent alot of time making a new filter housing cap. In the hope that i could take my oil feed and then return it back. As it turnes out this idea although could work. Its not a great solution and was starting to get a bit over complicated. And i had the feeling that its not the best solution.

Shame as it looked really good. I might still keep the billet cap as just a cap.

So it looks like i am going to need a S54 filter housing. Its a shame but i dont think i can buy it this month. The dam dog cost me £350 at the vets  So any car bits will have to wait a bit longer.

I have got my brake lines on order and shall be finally finishing that job this coming weekend. And yes Guidok i will sand and paint the calipers and then i shall was the car

As for fitting the hydraulic steering. I am going to wait until i have the filter housing. As its all in the same area and that will be a good fun day working on the car.

That cap looks really nice though!
What were the problems you encounered in the workings?

As for the s54 housings there are some on the german ebay that also take offers (3 offerings). You might get lucky.

Thanks i think i will mod it so its just an ally cap.
First problem was a bit of a silly one. Making stuff for a car when your not near the car is quite difficult. The pipe that sticks out to connect the oil line too wouldn't allot it to screw in. That could have been fixed quite easy.

But the biggest problem was there is an oil feed at the bottom of the housing. We hand cranked the car and you could see in pumping up from the bottom. So this design dose not work on this housing. I believe it may work on the s54 housing? But again i would need to cheek that.

No on the s54 housing there is also a bottom feed. But the s54 already has a cooler output so there is no need.

I've seen these caps for s50/s52 housings, but I havent seen the housing itself, so I cant verify if they work.

As you already have the cap, you might test it though (if you get the centerpipe in).
there is oil coming from the centerpipe as well like we talked about (in the normal cap it gets dispersed at the dome). And the filter has a flow resistance. So there still might be oil going through the cooler. Maybe not as much (or better said: all of it), but if you run the eninge and the cooler gets hot, it'll cool.

Ah ok well i might be able to use ports on the cap for a temp and pressure gauge.

It didn't seem to be sending pumping much if any through the center? Maybe more oil flows when its running? I may well continue and plum it in like we discussed. But ultimately i think the s54 housing is the only real way of doing.

If you look at pumping action with the cap off, everything what is pumped through the centerpipe flows directly to the sump again ;)
That hole gets blocked off by the o rings on that centerpipe.

If you buy a s54 housing, try to get one with the hydraulic tensioner still attached. the z4 has (stock) still a spring loaded tensioner.
BMW discontinued the spring loaded tensioner in their parts program (still available aftermarket though) but that means the hydraulic tensioner is an equal or better substitute. From bmw it's quite expensive.

I wont be buying anything this month. I just dont have the cash after the vet bill. So work on the car is at a halt for the time being.

Fella's

I think flow thru the filter is the other way round, oil from the pump/sump flows up and around the outside of the filter, before passing thru it (Cleaned), then down the centre pipe to the main bearings and galleries - If you think about it if you ever see a fully clogged filter it collapses in under the pump pressure not expands out.

It doesn't make much difference to your cooler take off Mat, but you'll want the flow right for the remote filter/thermostat (I'm assuming that's what your going to fit?)

Stu.

I agree oil dose seem to flow up and then outside in. There is a tread on e46 fanatics (i think?) else that suggests it flows up the very center of the oil cap stem. And then out to the outside of the filter and back through. Witch i believe may also happen? We are all in agreement that it flows outside in.

If i where to stay with the cap idea yes. But the s54 filter housing has outlets for an oil cooler already. And i am most likely going to go this route now.

So been far to busy with the supra build see thread update if your interested?

But finally after much faffing getting the rear disc guards off my old hubs and on the new modded ones its done sort of! Luckily Chris had brought a press and i was held up by not having a 46mm socket to remove the big nut holding it on. Anyway that has now all been done. The standard BMW brake lines where used and fitted as a straight swap. I had to do this as i was sent the wrong parts. The fitting at the car end to the hard line was bsp thread or something similar not the m10x1 needed and asked for. So next weekend i will be changing the lines over.

They have not been repainted as time was again against me having knackered the offside outer track rod end removing it. I had to get a lift and pick one up in a hurry and refit that.

Dont they still look small in the wheels!! they dont have the physical imposing and impressive looks i had hoped for. But they do seem to work very very well. They are still beading in but i am pleased with them its not massively different feel is better and it just feels as it should. Strong and powerful. Very happy monkey.

And Guidok the car has been washed and cleaned just for you

It's been a while since I've been on here, seems like I've missed quite a bit here! Nice work on a nice looking Zed. Especially the logo on the indicators look awesome :-p
