M suspension - more "comfortable" or "more stiff"...?

Does the M suspension option on the 2009+ Z4 make the car ride more "comfortable"/"smooth" - or does it make the car ride more "stiff"/"sporty"...?

The springs are a shorter travel with higher spring rate so less wallow but more ‘jiggley’ over rough surfaces..most people say that especially with runflats and/or 19” OE rims raises the level to ‘uncomfortable’ over bumpy surfaces..

As usual different people different views...

I have the springs but changed wheel sizes / non tin flats and better dampers it’s never uncomfortable but can be little jiggley still on broken surfaces

If you get the adaptive suspension you can select comfort or sport mode which the latter stiffens the dampers. This makes the car less prone to roll but also stiffer and harsher over rough roads. However a change to non run flats makes such a huge difference if you buy premium rubber that even in sport mode it’s perfectly fine, stiffer, less roll but without the harshness. Even 19’s are no problem with quality tyres in my opinion, in fact I’ll say in comfort mode on Michelin pilots with 19’s it’s almost too soft. I found drifting away from the door pillar tyre pressures really upsets the car, even if that’s pressures for 18’s, so I run those pressures after some experimenting. So imho tyres make the most difference rather than the dampers in each mode. On runflats and 19’s in sport it’s pretty nasty, far too harsh.

Hallelujah, brothers and sisters! I do declare, Brother John has finally seen the light! Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!

So if you are more interested in a comfortable ride - don't pay the extra for the M suspension...?

And get non run flat tires.

No, get the car that is right for you, you don’t need to use the adaptive if you don’t want to if it has it. Tyres are critical on these cars imho as I said.

Never said any different though Buster....I’ve always gone with the door pillar pressures, tried both higher and lower than pillar and disliked both, standard is king here... :D  :driving:

When I was looking at what version of the Z4 to buy I had a chat with some specialists amongst them Bird's BMW and Kevin told me not to bother with the M sport suspension since it's harsher without the trade off, of giving a significantly better sportier handling. He advised me for the best level of comfort and sport handling was to get a car with non M sport suspension and then if you need to, upgrade it with aftermarket components, also as everyone else has said get rid of the runflats if the car has them.

Did the 35i come with standard suspension and the adaptive as an option or was it standard as per the 35is...?

I’m thinking it was an option but really can’t remember enough...

You’ll be wanting a Mercedes then... lol.

Absolute rubbish. M Sports are harder than Standard but not harsh IMHO.

The point he was making is that the M sport suspension does not make the car dynamically that much better compared to trade off with somewhat harder ride.

Definitely less body roll with the M sport suspension.

I have the adaptive M suspension, and on 19" RFT I was always in Comfort. Changing to non RFT (PS4S), I find myself using Sport most of the time, and as others have stated, non RFT is probably the single most effective change to improve the ride.

As to your specific question, a non-adaptive M suspension will be harder so if you don't intend on replacing the RFT then maybe better to seek out a non M sport suspension, and 17" wheels.

M suspension/run-flats/19in OM wheels - and unless you hit a pothole and don't mind a stiffish ride (why would you, it's a two-seat sports car?) the ride is fine and comfortable and that's from a 73yr old whose previous two cars - in the last three years - have been new Honda Civic and Peugeot 3008 SUV. Sounds to me that you young 'uns want to be mollycoddled.

Think the adaptive was an option John, unless my memories shot as well :D

This should help clarify a few things on the suspension front, at least for the adaptive suspension:
